471 Chapter 471

471.Chapter 471

Thud. Sophie was jolted awake by a sudden sensation of weightlessness, followed by the cold, suffocating embrace of water closing in around her.

Hehelp!she gasped instinctively as she struggled to the surface, only to realize a moment later that her feet were touching the bottom.

When she straightened up, the water that had nearly drowned her was now only waistdeep.

What’s going on? Where am I? How did I get here?Sophie muttered in confusion, her body trembling violently in the chilly wind as she hugged herself, drenched to the bone.

As she turned to look behind her, she let out a scream, startled by three dark figures that loomed like ghosts in the pitch- black night. She fell backward into the water again.

Ah! Who are you? Don’t come any closer!Sophie shouted, her voice filled with panic.

Eliza watched Sophie’s terrified state with a mixture of amusement and satisfaction for a few moments before speaking in a soft, eerie voice. Mrs. Nevill, you’ve committed so many wrongdoings, yet you have such a small heart. Are you really afraid?

Sophie, who had been utterly terrified, suddenly recognized the voice. She jerked her head up toward the shore, her eyes darting nervously at the figure seated in the middle of the three shadows.

Upon closer inspection, Sophie finally saw Eliza, who looked perfectly at ease, along with the odious girl who had threatened her at the wedding, and another figure wrapped in black like a shadow guard.

Sophie’s anger flared the moment she realized what was happening. Eliza, so it’s you playing tricks on me,she hissed, fury coursing through her veins.

Now that she knew it was just people scaring her, Sophie splashed out of the water again and stormed toward the shore, intent on confronting Eliza. But as she neared the bank, the shadow guard beside Eliza sprang into action.

The figure, shrouded in black, kicked out at Sophie the moment she scrambled onto the shore, sending her sprawling back into the water.

Eliza, what on earth do you want?Sophie sputtered, having swallowed another mouthful of water.

She barely managed to catch her breath as she stood in the middle of the water, glaring at Eliza and her companions with a mix of anger and wariness.

Don’t tell me you kidnapped me here in the middle of the night just to drown me?Sophie said, her voice dripping with

sarcasm.

Drowning you here wouldn’t be such a bad idea,Eliza replied after another long moment of watching Sophie’s disheveled state. A cold, emotionless smile played on her lips as she added, Want to give it a try?

Almost as soon as Eliza finished speaking, the two figures beside her moved in unison.

Tina, let me handle this,Renee said, her eyes gleaming with excitement in the darkness. She pushed past Tina and strode into the water, quickly closing the distance between herself and Sophie in the middle of the water.

Sophie’s face drained of color as she realized the danger. She turned to flee, but it was too late.

In one swift motion, Renee leaped forward, grabbed Sophie by the hair, and dragged her back to Eliza.

No, Eliza, you can’t kill me. If you dare to harm me, my father will never let you go- Sophie’s threat was cut short as Renee yanked her head underwater again. Sophie choked and spluttered, unable to speak.

The icy cold water and the looming threat of death overwhelmed her. With each dunk underwater, Sophie’s sense of suffocation, despair, and fear grew stronger. Her mental defenses crumbled under the relentless torment.

Just as Sophie was on the verge of drowning, her head was yanked out of the water once more. This time, she dared not make any more threats. She sobbed and pleaded through her coughing, Please, no more. I’m sorry.

Tears streamed down Sophie’s face as she abandoned all dignity. All she wanted was to survive; she didn’t want to die.

Eliza, what do you want? I can help you. Do you want to go back to the Duke’s estate? I’ll beg my father. I can convince him if you don’t kill me. What else? Caleb? You want to marry Caleb, don’t you? I’ll divorce him. I’ll go back and divorce him right now. I’ll give you anything you want. Just please, don’t kill me,Sophie cried, her voice breaking with desperation.

Shut up,Eliza snapped, her brow furrowing slightly in annoyance at Sophie’s wailing. Sophie flinched, quickly clapping a hand over her mouth and staring at Eliza in terror.

Eliza glanced down, a rare sight of Sophie in such a disheveled state. I don’t want any of the things you mentioned. I’m long tired of being the legitimate daughter of the Duke’s estate.

She certainly sounds arrogant. Tired of being the legitimate daughter of the Duke’s estate?Sophie thought, clenching her
