After Carl left, Ryan stayed in the place and thought about what Carl said just now. Nikki almost died. Why did he say that?

Ryan promised, and quickly left. He was ready to go home to see whether Nikki was at home or not. When he arrived, he found the empty room seemed like someone hadn't lived in for a long time under the atmosphere of loneliness. Ryan didn’t see Nikki but found the divorce agreement signed by her.
