Chapter 49: Their new mother might be a man

His anger flared again, but this time, he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of embarrassment. He turned away, muttering curses under his breath, while the twins exchanged another bewildered glance.

His frustration palpable, he turned to Lian. "Get the antidote," he ordered, his voice edged with exasperation.

Lian nodded quickly, retrieving a red porcelain bottle from her pouch. She crushed the contents into a fine powder before handing it to her master. He glanced at it, then shook his head. "You feed it to him," he commanded.

Lian didn’t hesitate. She immediately complied but his face flushed with realisation. "Wait," he said, grabbing her arm. "I will do it." He was afraid she might see something she wasn’t supposed to see and ruin her innocence.

He took the antidote from her, his expression a mix of embarrassment and annoyance. Walking over to the unconscious man, he forced the medicine down his throat, ensuring he swallowed every bit. The twins watched with wide eyes, their curiosity piqued.

As Xiang Yu got back up, Lian and Mei exchanged glances. They were slowly getting used to the idea that their new "mother" might be a man. Lian’s eyes then caught sight of the jade pendant around his neck.

"Master, where did you find that? I thought you lost it," Lian asked, pointing to the pendant. Their master had even asked the demon king of the east to find him that jade pendant and he would help them fend off their enemies. He was willing to go to war for a demon king who despised him for that very same pendant.

Mei’s eyes widened in realisation. "The unconscious man had it! Master, you know him?" She couldn’t help but make up a scenario in her head that their master lied and had gifted the man the jade pendant as a love token. The man left their master, and Xiang Yu was too heartbroken to say that the person he fell in love with left with the jade pendant.

Xiang Yu’s face turned a deep shade of red, a rare sight for the usually composed Demon King. He struggled to find the words, his embarrassment evident. "It’s... complicated," he muttered, avoiding their inquisitive gazes. How was he supposed to say that this man embarrassed him several times? Each time they met he was at a disadvantage and now he had even lost his first kiss to him.

The twins exchanged knowing looks, their curiosity only growing. Xiang Yu, feeling the weight of their stares, turned away. He immediately tried to change the subject. "What did you find out about the golden token?" he asked, his voice sharp with impatience.

Lian and Mei exchanged a glance before Lian spoke up. "We asked around, Master. Someone directed us to the Taoist temple." They had hiked up the mountain outside the city to meet this master. This was why it took them a long time to get back.

Mei nodded, picking up the story. "The priest there told us that the token is from the Heavenly Sect."

Xiang Yu’s eyes widened slightly. The Heavenly Sect was as mysterious as it gets. All he knew about them was that they were was renowned for policing all the other immortal sects. They were the ones called upon when there was an issue they couldn’t handle or complicated matters that no other sect could resolve. Their secrecy was legendary, and anyone who was owed a favour by them was as good as being owed a favour by the gods.
