The smile on Melody's face froze, but she knew that Jeremy was telling the truth.
If Cheryl hadn't met with that accident, she would've gotten engaged to him, and the people in Jembina would've envied them greatly.
It was beyond question that Melody had benefited from Cheryl's unfortunate demise. However, she still felt as if someone clutched and squeezed her heart.
What did he mean when he said that he didn't really like being with her?
Melody bit her lips. Her voice sounded dry when she asked, "Didn't you ask me to move in with you in the first place?"
Back then, she had just graduated, found a job at Jembina Hospital, and fully intended to rent a place by herself. However, Andrew shot down her ideas, resulting in Jeremy's suggestion to let her move in with him.
Jeremy remained stoic. There was turmoil in his heart, but it plummeted in a matter of a second, leaving him confused.
He looked at Melody calmly. "Cheryl told me repeatedly to look after you."
"So, are you treating me the way you are because of Cheryl?" Melody asked softly as she clenched her fists.
Jeremy didn't respond to her. He didn't have to—because the answer was clear as day.
"B-But you were the one who…" Melody trailed off, unable to form a comprehensive response. She had no idea what she should say.
After all, Jeremy had indeed suggested it in the first place.
Silence hung over the room for a moment. Naturally, he knew what she was inferring to. He responded indifferently, "That's why I said I will make it up to you. You can ask for anything, be it money or status. I will give them to you."
Melody was utterly disheartened, and tears began welling up in her eyes. She understood what he meant when he said he would make it up to her. However, that was all there was to it. He wasn't doing it because of any other reason and it definitely wasn't because he loved her.
