Charles did not say anything.
“Do you really think the threats of your aunts and the others will work on me?” Master Harris looked at him with daggers in his eyes.
Charles lowered his head to stare at his toes. “You should know better than I do.”
Master Harris sneered coldly. “Tell me, if I use the 21% shares in my hands as collateral and tell your aunts and Uncle Oscar that I’ll change the will, do you think they will still threaten me?”
There was a stunned look on Charles' eyes, but it was just a matter of seconds before he recovered himself. “They probably won’t.”
“Get out there and kneel! Don’t get up without my permission!” Master Harris was in a rage.
Charles replied and proceeded to head out the door to kneel. Ken followed behind, monitoring him from the side.
A few Harris family members walked out upon hearing the commotion. They came up to console him quietly out of politeness and left.
The floor of the hallway was cool, and Charles’ legs had gone numb after kneeling for two hours. He could not feel a thing.
“Mr. Harris, you’re doing this for Miss White, aren’t you? It’s only a woman. Is she worth doing this?” Ken asked.
Charles pinched his icy-cold legs. “If it’s not worth it, then tell me, Ken, why go to prison over a woman?”
“It was a time of youth and vigor,” Ken said simply without explaining much.
There were not many people at night, but there were still families of patients as well as doctors and nurses on duty. They looked curiously at Charles who was kneeling outside the ward.
When dawn was about to break, Ken glanced at Charles’ ghastly pale face and walked into the ward. He came out not long after.
“Master Harris says you can get up now,” Ken said.
Charles smiled. “Thank you, Ken.”
He tried to balance himself with both palms on the ground while getting up, but his legs were fully numb from kneeling too long. He staggered for a moment, almost falling to the ground. He only managed to stand on his feet with Ken’s help.
“Do you want to get a ward to rest in or return to Bamboo Virtues Village?” Ken asked.
Charles stabled himself with a hand against the wall while the other hand massaged his numbed legs. “Bamboo Virtues Village.”
He returned to Bamboo Virtues Village with Ken after his legs felt better.
The moment they got off the car, Charles bumped into Leah who was walking slowly while holding onto her wheelchair.
“I’ll take my leave first, Mr. Harris.” Ken greeted Leah and left without even bothering to get out of the car.
Leah stopped walking with an astonished look on her face. “Charles, what are you doing here?”
“I have a place here,” Charles replied.
Leah’s hands held onto the back of her wheelchair. She eyed Charles up and down. She bit her lip and said, “Why do you have so many wounds on you? Is it because you made Grandpa Harris mad over Sophia?”
Charles looked coolly at her. “I fell by accident. I’m a little tired. I’m heading back to rest.”
With that, he turned to leave.
Leah called out to him from behind, “Charles, can I have a minute? I have something to say to you.”
Charles stopped in his tracks and turned back to face her.
