While the surviving people of the alliance wept, Atticus' gaze remained locked onto the spot where the Spirit King had vanished.
'I didn't see this coming.'
It went without saying, the Spirit King had completely blindsided him. His focus had been solely on Whisker's siblings, and in doing so, he had practically forgotten about a far greater threat lurking in the shadows.
'If not for Ozeroth… and Zoey, he might have succeeded.'
Atticus still had no clue what exactly the purple haired girl had done, but one thing was clear, he hadn't been here. And if it weren't for them, Eldoralth would've been reduced to ash.
'He's always watching.'
Atticus turned his gaze to the skies. The only reason the Spirit King had been able to strike at the perfect moment was because he was always watching Eldoralth.
'Is it because of the presence of spirits? Or the abundance of spiritual energy?'
More than a century of quiet planning had allowed the Spirit King to saturate the world with spiritual energy.
In truth, the power they used wasn't just energy, it was his Will. Atticus still remembered the feeling when his own Will had engulfed half of Eldoralth. He could feel everything, faintly. With just a single thought, he could see anything.
If the Spirit King had that kind of dominion over Eldoralth…
'I don't like it.'
He had to put an end to it, fast.
His figure burst into light, and in the next instant, Ozeroth and Noctis shot out in front of him. The latter had returned to his small and furry form.
With eyes that gleamed like twin suns, he leapt onto Atticus' head, his excited voice ringing out.
"Dada! Dada!"
Noctis slobbered all over Atticus' face, licking enthusiastically.
Though they'd only been apart for under an hour, it had felt like an eternity to the little guy.
"Urgh, Noctis."
Atticus scrunched his face in mild disgust, but didn't pull away. He let the excited beast have his fun. It was hard to stay annoyed at someone so innocent and happy.
After about a minute, once Noctis had thoroughly soaked every inch of his face, he finally pulled back. His wide eyes looked at the spit covered Atticus with an innocent expression, like he hadn't just bathed him in saliva.
"Kuu!" Noctis lunged again, landing atop Atticus' head and settling there like it was his new kingdom.
Atticus chuckled. Truth be told, after everything that had happened, the distraction was a welcome one.
He focused on the water element and cleaned the mess off his face, then turned to his purple spirit, who stood unusually quiet.
"You okay?" Atticus asked.
"…Yeah, sure."
Ozeroth's reply was heavy, like it carried more weight than he wanted to admit.
And as his bonded partner, there was no way Atticus wouldn't notice.
'He's blocking access.'
He had just tried to tap into Ozeroth's memories, only to be met with a wall.
'It has to be the Spirit King.'
Atticus was certain. He could guess and make assumptions, sure, but there was no substitute for hearing it directly.
"You don't seem okay, Ozeroth."
Atticus didn't bother sugar coating it.
