Did Grey Pepare This for Me?
I banished Grey from my thoughts. When I entered, Lia was already there, waiting for me. A pink lunch box and a bottle of mineral water stood on top of the table in front of her.
When she spotted me, her shapely lips stretched into a smile. “I made a Mango float for our dessert” Fumbling inside her backpack, she took a pink Tupperware out. “Your favorite,” she added with a grin before placing it on the table beside her lunch box.
Instantly, my face lit up with appreciation. Lia knew I had an affinity for sweets, and she frequently spoiled me with her homemade desserts. “Thank you! I can’t wait to have a tastel” I told her, eyeing the mango float with my mouth watering.
Without a moment’s delay, I pressed my thumb on the biometrics on the wall to punch my time out before sinking into the upholstered chair opposite Lia.
After taking the food Celine had prepared out of my lunch bag, I placed it on the table. Lia eyed them greedily, her large eyes widening even more. “So many,” she mumbled absentmindedly, picking up her spoon and fork to indulge herself in the treat, but then she stopped as though she remembered to do something important–far more important than her growling stomach.
I watched Lia lower her spoon and fork on the table with regret in her eyes. Fumbling inside her backpack once more, she produced a small cupcake and a little pink candle.
Amusement lit my eyes when she unsealed the cupcake and buried the tip of the candle on top of it. A lighter magically appeared in her other free hand. She must have taken it from inside her pocket while I was looking at the chocolate cupcake.
“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you….” Lia sang cheerfully, my cheeks flushing in embarrassment at her over–the- top birthday preparations. Luckily, we were alone inside the room, and no one could see us now, or else the whole restaurant staff would realize I was keeping my birthday all to myself.
She could have just greeted me with a happy birthday, and that would have been enough. But being Lia, she had a few stunts prepared for occasions like this one.
“Close your eyes, Lily. Make a wish.” Lia held the chocolate cupcake in her dainty palms and waited for me to blow out the candle.
Closing my eyes, I made a quiet wish. It was not just a wish, but a desire. It was what I had been wishing to have for years. Just this one wish, Lord. I will never ask anything from you again, a voice said inside my head. Lifting my eyes, I blew out the tiny flame.
