Chapter 133: Brent’s second worst nightmare

Brent and Kellen were in a normal classroom today on one of the Guide floors. The plan they had come up with was to rotate every other day in the gym, and on the rest day they would be going over vital information. It made sense to give their brains a rest on days when their bodies couldn’t and vice versa. But, they would see how well it would do in practice.

When Kellen made his way to the classroom, he was already jogging lightly. He’d had to take the stairs to get here since the elevators were too slow, and he was worried about Brent. He was right to be worried. The man was flustered, almost sputtering at the front of the room. What didn’t help was the way the rest of the Guides looked at him. Like he hung the moon and the stars. Brent wasn’t good with that much admiration.

Kellen had a feeling that even if it wasn’t on the second day, this was eventually going to happen. Brent was supposed to act like a teacher’s aid. Even if he led his own portion of the class, Kellen was still the main teacher. Brent was supposed to be the pretty Guide who smiled and flexed his muscles when it was needed. Leaving him alone in a room of Guides who he wasn’t allowed to seduce for moral reasons?

It must have been hell.

Kellen couldn’t help but chuckle to himself at the state of the room. The documents they had printed out were scattered around the large desk at the front of the room, the projector was set up, but it was on the first slide, and Brent was sweating. Oh well. He wanted Brent, and he wasn’t going to regret it. He just hoped that he at least wouldn’t look like a deer in the headlights.

"Oh look! It’s Guide Woods! Since he’s here now, why don’t you ask him?" Immediately deflecting everything to Kellen, Brent sat down and tried to be out of sight, out of mind. Kellen shook his head, but closed the door behind him and headed for the front of the room.

"What was that that you were asking about?" Kellen asked with a smile, and found himself facing a room of stunned Guides. It wasn’t as if they hadn’t seen him wearing this before, he’d literally worn it yesterday, but something felt different.

Oh. The press conference. Kellen smirked.

"Did you see the press conference?" He asked, and several nodded, including Bree. Sighing, Kellen leaned against the desk, practically hiding Brent from view. He wasn’t a monster in that sense, he’d help the guy out. "Alright, then let’s forget the question that was asked of Guide Jameson for a second, what did you think of the press conference?" He asked the ground of regular Guides, and watched a few of them swallow. He had thought that Bree would be the first one to speak up, but he was surprised when it was one of the other Guides, the girl of the pair who had joined the morning class, who spoke up.

"Um, I thought it was...pretty cool." She answered, her cheeks flaming. Kellen blinked. "The reporters were really insistent that you did something wrong. N-Not that I’m saying that harming another is okay, and under any other circumstances I would have been pretty upset too, but...we were there. I was...one of the Espers is also on my roster for weekly guiding. It was pretty upsetting to find out that other Guides who were also supposed to be taking care of them weren’t. I wanted to do something, but I didn’t know what I could do. I was approached by the group that did this, but I chickened out at the last minute. I couldn’t hurt others like that. To find out that they had done it to this extent? Any Guide who is worth their salt would, no, should be livid at what they’ve done." Kellen was surprised by her impassioned speech, and so did many of the others. A few Guides reached out and patted her on the shoulder in comfort and support.

"I agree with most of what you said. I was never approached by them, because they knew better. I was never going to join them. I take my work seriously, and it pisses me off that someone could get away with something like this. Admittedly, it was terrifying to find out what you did, and to watch the video after class yesterday, but after being in your class, I understood. There is a difference between Field Guides and the other Guides. You literally risk your life every day to make sure everyone gets out safely. Espers can’t always be focusing on what the next safe step is when using their powers to protect everyone. The same should apply in the city as well. I don’t know if I would have gone as far as you went, Guide Woods, but I support what you did. And, it was cool to see you lecture a bunch of idiots who couldn’t know a Guide from an Esper." One of the male Guides spoke up, a few seats away from the first girl.
