Chapter 193: First day as a regular Guide in the Saturn Guild

Kellen wasn’t sure if he should be thankful that the Captain wasn’t in his apartment when he entered it. And nothing seemed to be disturbed, so quickly before he got into his shower, Kellen took the posters he’d placed in his closet of the Captain down and tucked them into the proper box before getting ready for work.

Today he was going to wear his proper Saturn Guild Guide outfit, and after he made sure it was in perfect condition, he jumped into the shower. Taking a quick clean, Kellen then made sure he ate a filling, full of nutrients meal before chugging 4 of the shakes he had stocked in his fridge before heading out the door.

The first guiding session he had booked was with one of the A Class Espers that he’d met several times in the gym. He’d only booked the lowest level of guiding, and he hoped that everyone would be understanding of that.

Even he wasn’t foolish enough to push the Captain by guiding at any level higher. Kellen had some self awareness.

He would hate if the Captain was guided by anyone at any level, but especially if it was done at a higher level now. Just thinking about it had Kellen clenching his fist tightly.

That reminded him of that damn Guide from Guiding Center A who had been offered to guide Rhys at the bomb site. Those fucking pricks. They knew that Kellen was going to be there, but they wanted to embarrass him.

Thankfully, that wasn’t something that would do so. But it did make Kellen pissed. It was one of the reasons he didn’t want to rely on Guiding Center A for their supplement of Guides, but at the same time he didn’t want to leave his old Guiding Center short staffed. If he could pull Guides from at least three, he’d feel better.

Kellen’s head was full of thoughts about his next step after his guiding sessions with Espers, so much so that he arrived at the Guiding Division without preparing himself to guide. Kellen had no idea where he was supposed to go, since he normally did all of his guiding in the Medical Bay so Taylor could observe them.

He wasn’t used to being a regular Guide anymore.

Kellen wanted to laugh at himself for such newbie behaviour, and thankfully, one of his afternoon class students was around. They watched as Kellen glanced around the cubicles nervously, unsure what to do.

Guide Anderson was busy on a phone call, no doubt to Casper, so Kellen didn’t feel right interrupting him. His student swept in to the rescue.

"Good morning Instructor Woods! Did you need something? You aren’t normally in the Guiding Division. It’s usually Instructor Jameson that I see here." His voice was cheerful, and Kellen shifted in his stance, staring down at the man who was slowly filling out.

He was very middle of the pack for his class, but that didn’t mean his efforts were in vain. Kellen could already tell that his speed and endurance had increased. He’d make a good Field Guide if he kept to it.

"That is because the Captain and I usually do our guiding sessions while being monitored by Esper Green so we don’t need to come to the Guiding Division that often. That will change for a bit. Lieutenant Casper has been put on medical leave and I am filling in the gaps. I’m finding that I am lacking critical knowledge since I don’t know how you normally go about your sessions here." Several Guides gasped around the office, and Kellen watched as several sets of eyes peeked out above cubicles or around corners to stare at him.

He did his best not to smile.

The student before him also had a stunned, shocked expression on his face before it fell into a harsh expression. Understanding washed over his features.

"Well, I’m glad someone finally stepped in. We were too scared to say something." He muttered, and Kellen frowned. He stepped forward, putting a hand on his shoulder, giving it a squeeze.

"That whole train of thought is something that Casper and I are going to work towards to eliminate. I know that with the recent events, the Division is stretched thin, and I am working towards fixing it, even if it is temporary." Kellen looked up, glancing around the room and raising his voice slightly. "I want everyone to know that your hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed, and we are grateful that you are so willing to help out given everything that has happened. If anyone is feeling burnt out, please don’t be afraid to speak to us about it. You won’t be punished, I promise." Kellen told them, before turning his gaze back to his student.
