Chapter 71 - Reaction of the Chairman

"The son of Vespera... There's no doubt about that," the chairman of the Awakened Association murmured after he finished watching the recording of the duel that took place between the two newly awakened youths.

"Yes. The Ashborn household was a cautious family who kept their children's names hidden until they awakened, presumably to allow them a normal upbringing in public. Kaiden Ashborn was never registered in any government database, even before the apocalypse struck. However, our team managed to uncover a few photographs of him being escorted by the family's butler to school. Our analytics department reconstructed what Kaiden would have looked like as a child, and the face they derived perfectly matched the one we see in the photos."

Grace, the chairman's secretary, informed before she continued.

"We managed to discover the most likely reasoning behind Kaiden's disowning. An adult entertainment studio had just released three videos in which he starred as the male lead, and the three women who were called compromising names by the A-tier awakened David Bennett were the female leads. Vespera likely got wind of the situation and swooped in before Kaiden could carelessly use his name as an adult actor, bringing shame to the family and the entire New Dawn guild."

"Haaah... That woman will be the end of me, I swear. Why is everything so difficult when it comes to her?" the chairman grumbled right after sighing tiredly. "Didn't the little sister assault a group of awakened just yesterday?"

"Yes, according to Alice Ashborn's recounting of the events, they were speaking in an ill-mannered way about Kaiden Grey. We are waiting for them to regain consciousness—if they do at all—to hear their part of the story."

"Haaah..." The chairman sighed once again while massaging his temples. He was a mighty existence on the level of the strongest tier of awakened, but he had the sworn duty of maintaining peace through more diplomatic methods, forcing him to have a lot of headaches while dealing with the awakened people, and none gave him stronger migraines than Vespera Ashborn.

Usually, it was because she had a body count of murdered awakened in the thousands that kept increasing nearly every day she stepped out of her home, forcing the association to sweep things under the rug instead of bringing her to court as that would be a beyond futile effort. But now it was for an even more annoying issue.

They'd been studying the mana apocalypse religiously ever since it occurred, and Kaiden and his three women were truly interesting cases. They each awakened together, all three females had Valkyrie-named classes and were even recognized to have the same potential output by the artifact as Kaiden's Paragon of Sin class, as if their strength level was connected to his.

Each awakened tier was categorized by the strength of the signal the artifact emitted upon their reading, but within the same class, disparities happened all the time. No two separate classes had the same reading. Yet, somehow, all four of them had the exact same output.

Vespera's threats forced the association to decide between losing one of their strongest awakened and having her join China, the country who were the most threatening to the continued peace of global dominance of the USA due to its large populace of awakened people and the iron grip the CCP held over them, or giving up on studying such a rare and curious phenomenon.

The chairman was undecided about which route to take until he received a call from the president himself and was ordered to stand down, no questions asked.

"I see... that organization must be mad about this artifact. Weren't they developing a mana camera with the same proposed functions?"
