Chapter 84 Hunting For A Meal Ticket
‘Sharon Hoyles,‘ Darya sneered. ‘What’s she still doing at the company?‘
After she kicked the woman off her team, Darya thought Sharon had left Paragon with her tail between her legs.
‘She’s been demoted,‘ Glen said. ‘Mr Avery decided to keep her on.‘
‘For what?‘
‘I think he’s trying to use her as bait.‘
‘We already know the one colluding with her is Douglas Kay.‘
‘Mr Avery says Douglas is slippery. He needs Sharon to-‘
‘To lead Douglas to make more mistakes. Got it.‘ Darya set down her coffee. ‘Fine. But it doesn’t mean I have to tolerate that woman making waves in the company.‘
‘Would you like me to do something about it?‘ Glen offered. ‘I could have her transferred to an office out of
town.”
‘Nah, that defeats Avery’s purpose of keeping her here.‘ Darya tapped a finger on the desk. ‘Could you just find out what she’s been up to lately? Both on and off work.‘
‘I happen to have some knowledge in that area.‘ Glen said by way of explanation, ‘The guy who sits across from her in the office likes to, um, share.‘
‘Go ahead.‘
‘Sharon’s been looking for a boyfriend.”
‘She’s single? I thought she and Douglas had a thing going on.”
‘What they have is an arrangement, but I think Sharon’s looking for a more long–term meal ticket.‘
‘She had any luck?‘
‘According to her colleague, no. Which is why she clocks off at six pm on the dot every day and goes bar hopping in town. In hopes of finding a suitable boyfriend.‘
‘I see.‘
‘May I know what you plan to do with her, Miss Miller?‘
‘Why? So you can run off to my big brother and tell on me?‘ Darya teased.
‘Of course not. I’d like to be of assistance, if possible.‘

‘It’s fine. I can handle it.‘
‘As you wish.‘ Glen left the office and closed the door behind him.
Darya switched on her computer and scanned the news headlines.
As expected, pictures of her and Callan were splashed across the front page of Hagen Daily.
Callan seemed totally unconcerned when she mentioned this to her brother yesterday.
‘There’s no such thing as bad publicity,‘ he claimed. ‘My agent’s not worried. My publicist is not worried. My
assistant is not worried. So-‘
‘So I shouldn’t worry, either?‘ Darya finished his sentence for him.
Callan raised his glass in a mock salute.
‘Fine. It’s your reputation on the line.‘
Still, Darya didn’t want her brother’s return to Hagen to be marred by groundless gossip.
His dream was to become a pop icon, not a playboy.
She scrolled through her contact list, found the number she wanted, then hit dial.
Bradley Gould, CEO of the entertainment company Eminence, worked for her.
It would be a piece of cake for him to turn the tide of public opinion around.
While Darya worked on trying to salvage her brother’s reputation, Micah stood in front of the floor–to–ceiling glass window in his top–floor office twenty–six blocks away, lost in thought.
On the rosewood desk behind him, his computer screen displayed the same headline Darya had seen.
Micah couldn’t get the pictures out of his head.
He had a meeting in fifteen minutes, but he just couldn’t seem to focus.
Was it true, what the news said about Darya and Callan?
Micah wanted to deny it, but he remembered seeing the two of them at the supermarket.
They were shopping for groceries, just like an ordinary couple.
Micah never went grocery shopping with Darya while they were married.
In fact, he couldn’t recall the last time he ever went anywhere with her–other than the hospital, of course. Norris Hewitt knocked on the door before pushing it open. ‘Mr Cavanaugh, the meeting’s about to start.‘ ‘Who do you know at Hagen Daily?‘ Micah asked without turning around.
‘I happen to be acquainted with the editor–in–chief.”
‘Reach out to him. Ask him to pull the front page report.

Micah spun around and shot his assistant a dark look. ‘Yes.‘
‘Um, sure, I’ll get on it right away.”
‘She’s my ex–wife. The news will bring unwanted attention to me and the company,‘ Micah hastened to explain, though Norris didn’t ask for a reason for the order.
‘I understand,‘ Norris said with a straight face.
He didn’t bring up the matter again until after the meeting. ‘Mr Cavanaugh, the article has been taken offline.”
‘Good. You work fast.‘
‘No, that’s what I wanted to tell you. I called the editor, but he has yet to get back to me.‘
Micah stopped walking. ‘Then who took it offline?‘
‘I asked around. It seems to be the work of Mr Bradley Gould, of Eminence Entertainment.‘
‘Did Callan sign with his company?‘
‘Not to my knowledge.‘
‘Then why did Bradley do it?‘
