Whitney’s words came out of nowhere, completely derailing Sandy’s thoughts. All of a sudden, she went silent.

Confusion washed over her. Her eyes flickered as she tried to piece things together. Earlier, during her argument with Sienna, a little girl had dashed down the stairs, only to be shielded behind Sienna. Sandy distinctly remembered the girl calling out, “Mommy, Mommy!”

Back then, Sandy didn’t know if the girl was calling out to Sienna—or to her.
