Vivian inhaled sharply at Sterling's words.
"Fresh?" Miley tensed, her eyes scanning the room with renewed alertness.
She turned to the maid standing by the door. "Has Manfred been back these past two days? Or has anyone else died in this room recently?"
The maid immediately replied, "No, Mr. Atkinson hasn't returned, and no one has entered his room in his absence. But two days ago, a woman—a beauty, died here."
Miley raised a brow and glanced at Sterling. "You're overthinking it. You know how Manfred is. Wherever he's been these past two days, someone's probably suffering for it."
Sterling remained skeptical, his sharp gaze sweeping the room again, restless and searching. Once suspicions took root, he wouldn't stop until he unearthed the truth.
Something was off.
He began pacing.
The sound of his footsteps echoed in the hidden chamber. The sound was enough to send shivers down the spine, but Vivian remained unmoved. Her lips were a firm line, her gaze steady and unafraid.
"There's nothing here. Let's go," Miley urged.
Sterling's search of the room yielded nothing. Frustration tightened his features. He was ready to give up and follow Miley when his eyes snagged on something—the wall. From there, his gaze moved to the bed.
Miley's patience snapped as she saw Sterling still lingering. "What now? Stop dawdling, and let's go."
Dawn was still hours away. It had been ages since they'd had any fun together. She refused to let this night slip by.
Sterling ignored her and took a step toward the bed.
Before he could get closer, a loud voice called from outside the door. "Mr. Bowman, something's happened to Mr. Edson!"
Sterling's expression darkened instantly.

Is the author going to finally portray Skylark as a brave woman who can argue and communicate like a normal person in this real world? Hoping so.......
I don't like this story portraying Skylark's personality as too weak, too naive, Can't even defend herself Like accepting every humiliation from Vera's schemes and injustice without saying anything or doing anything. I wonder who is the protagonist in this novel, Vera or Skylark....
