Multiple tests were conducted on Patricia, Teddy, Shawn, and Hayley, taking a few hours to complete. Throughout it all, the three of them felt as if they were simply drifting through the process. They didn’t even realize the tests were over until they were told to change back into their clothes.
One of them, however, was excited about everything — and everyone knew exactly who that was.
Although Patricia felt a little conflicted after witnessing just a glimpse of Penny’s craziness, she also understood one thing: this wouldn’t have happened if Cassandra hadn’t crossed the line.
Cassandra had wanted trouble, and she got it.
More importantly, Patricia was grateful. Even though Penny wasn’t particularly close to her, she still made Patricia feel what it was like to be under someone’s wing.
Now, Patricia could finally understand her brother, Theo. She had always thought Theo was just being overly grateful to Charles because the Bennets had bought the Millers’ company and still given Theo and Mr. Miller positions. But now, she realized how shallow that perspective had been.
So, after thinking it through, Patricia was overwhelmingly happy about getting hired!
"Success!" Patricia cheered as she stepped into the hallway, spotting her future colleagues emerging from another door. As if she had already forgotten about her earlier arrest, Patricia leaped toward them.
"Hello, office mates~!" she greeted enthusiastically. "Congrats to the four of us on getting the job!"
Unlike her, the three barely lifted their heads, their enthusiasm nowhere near hers.
Ironically, they knew getting hired was good news. But for some reason, they couldn’t even bring themselves to celebrate.
"What’s wrong with you three?" Patricia blinked at their expressions. Then she blinked again. "Did something bad happen? Don’t tell me you found out you have a terminal illness?"
The three of them just stared at Patricia’s overly bright demeanor.
"...How can you act like you forgot you were arrested earlier?" Teddy blurted out in disbelief. "Did that really slip your mind?"
"Of course not! Why would I forget such a great reminder that my boss is a powerful person who stands up for me?" Patricia laughed. "That two-faced woman had it coming."
Hayley furrowed her brows. "That woman in the ward...?"
"She’s the reason I got arrested. Shawn too—he was detained unfairly because of her," Patricia explained. Her brows rose as she studied their expressions. "Let’s grab lunch. I’ll tell you everything you need to know about Penny. I actually know her, you know? And... she hates me—hehe."
---
Just when Hayley, Teddy, and Shawn thought nothing else could surprise them today, they were proven wrong.
They had agreed to have lunch with Patricia purely out of curiosity—at least, that was Teddy and Hayley’s reason. As for Shawn, a chronic people-pleaser, he had agreed simply because he couldn’t say no.
And so, they ended up in a small restaurant nearby, where Patricia began telling them stories that almost sounded too ridiculous to be true.
"You... and her...?" Hayley trailed off, staring at Patricia strangely. "You used to be enemies?"
"Mhm." Patricia nodded, enjoying her noodles. "I didn’t like her, and she didn’t like me. Even as adults, we still don’t like each other. But since she bought our failing company and saved my family from financial ruin, I changed my ways. I still don’t like her, but who likes their boss, right?"
She slurped her noodles before continuing.
"What I’m saying is, Penny can be crazy, but she’s not all that bad. I get that she might seem completely unhinged, but that’s only because you don’t know the full story. That woman in the hospital? She kept toeing the line. Today, she crossed it—and got put back in her place. Penny doesn’t like me, but she still did that for me."
