Chapter 160: THE QUIET NIGHT

"Don’t leave..." Cane’s voice was so soft, until it almost sounded like he was pleading. He could care less about his own life, but there were so many lives hanging above his head if something were to happen to him.

On the other hand, Iris stopped moving away from him and even though she couldn’t hear the pleading tone in his voice, she could hear the low, distressful growl from the beast.

She was still trembling, but she balled her hands into fists to stay where she was. It took everything in her just not to run away and leave him behind, which could expose Cane’s curse and the consequences that ensued would be so dire.

Seeing Iris sit silently not too far from him, staring at him with eyes filled with fear, Cane couldn’t do much. As he felt the pain course through his veins, he had a hard time breathing while his senses to his surroundings intensified.

Yet, the only scent and presence that was prominent to him was; Iris’. Her scent made him draw closer to her. Despite the pain that he had to endure when he moved his body, the lycan moved closer to the terrified girl.

At this point, Cane had fully shifted into his lycan’s form, which was larger than his usual beast’s form. Its fur was so dark, as if he blended with the night.

Slowly, the lycan prowled toward Iris, as if he was staring at his prey. His movements were so smooth and prudent, while his eyes stayed fixed on her. His elongated canines were on full display and once you were clamped between those razor sharp canines, not only your flesh that would be ripped apart, but your bones as well.

In this moment, just one mishap could end Iris’ life.

Silent tears fell on her cheeks, she was too scared to even say anything. She even felt her life flash before her eyes and her heart rose to her throat when she watched the beast stalk closer to her before its soft fur brushed against her arm.

The lycan was so big. This creature was as big as a bear with sharp eyes that filled with anger. Those eyes were so horrifying.

Iris jolted when she felt the beast come closer to her and snuggled its head against her face. Its nose was on her neck and he could snap her into two without any effort at all.

She closed her eyes because she was too afraid. There was no one here to save her if things went south. Yet, it was at that very time that she heard the beast whimpering, while she felt something nudging her hand.

She ignored it, but the beast kept nudging her hand persistently. The next second, she felt something fall on her lap. It was so heavy and out of curiosity, she pressed down her fear to open her eyes to see the lycan had its huge head on her lap, its eyes closed shut.

Iris couldn’t believe what she was seeing.

Probably the thought that Ethan and Jace were not here clouded her mind and made her forget that this was the same beast that had saved her from the Brinetallon, the monster that had attacked the Blue Moon pack on that same full moon night.

Cane was right, his lycan form looked calm enough, even without the chains that held him back, he didn’t run rampant and if they could go through this night like this, everything would be fine for them.

Slowly, Iris braced herself before she raised her hand and caressed the beast’s head, like she did with Cane. At first, the beast gave a start, which made her pause her movements, but then its body gradually relaxed.

Surprisingly, despite how ferocious the lycan appeared, its fur was so soft, Iris almost felt like she was caressing a rabbit instead.
