"Are you sick, Luna?" Jace asked out of concern. He stared at Iris, who just got down from the carriage with the help of Cane. The color of her face was almost the same as her hair.
But, Iris missed the question since she wasn’t looking in his direction. Hearing Jace, Cane pressed his knuckles to her forehead to feel her temperature. It was warm.
This sudden touch made Iris lift her head and look at him.
"Are you feeling unwell?" Cane asked lightly, not looking as concerned and watched how his mate shook her head profusely, as she moved slightly away from him, but he caught her hand and led them toward a small rickety hut. "She is fine," he said to his beta.
Meanwhile, Jace dropped the matter and followed them into the hut, where Haco and two warriors from the Howling Wolf pack were waiting for them, so was Grace, the healer. She just arrived here a few hours ago and started to work with Haco after receiving a brief introduction explaining who this man was.
It had been a few months since the last time Iris saw Grace, but she looked as beautiful as ever, as she greeted her politely and showed the same concern as Jace did.
"I am fine," Iris repeated the same answer, but Grace noticed something else, which made her face redden.
"What happened to your lips? Have you put an ointment on your wound?"
Iris’ lips were swollen and the wound on her lips must be noticeable for Grace to see it immediately upon a closer look. Grace didn’t know what Alpha Gill had done to Iris and probably she would never know about it. She was surprised like the rest to hear the news about how Alpha Cane executed the five alphas.
But right now, the members of their pack were overjoyed with the news of a pregnant woman coming and announcing she was carrying Alpha Cane’s child.
Grace was one of the handful people who knew it was impossible for Cane to sire a child.
On the other hand, out of instinct, Iris glanced at Cane, but the Alpha didn’t seem to pay attention to them, as he talked away with Haco.
"Yes, I have applied some ointment," Iris mumbled, feeling embarrassed and shifted her attention to the conversation between Cane and Haco.
The sorcerer looked so old, his white hair had grown much longer from the last time she had seen him.
"... Like you already know, black magic leaves traces and I can feel it here," Haco said. "Whoever performed it, they left in a hurry and maybe thought no one would find this place at all, so they left behind a lot of evidence." Haco waved his hand around this area.
"What kind of black magic?"
"I am not sure, whatever they performed, it’s a powerful one."
Cane’s brows creased. He then looked at Iris beside him. "Can you feel it?"
