"She is pregnant." The healer that Ian found, confirmed Elder Rose’s suspicion about the change on Abby’s body. This was the last nail in the coffin for the Serafim, even Ian was shocked when he learned about this.
"You can leave," Elder Rose said, dismissed the healer from the room. "No. You stay. There are questions I need to ask you."
Ian was about to leave with the healer too when the elder told him to stay behind. Obediently, he stood in his place, he felt complicated when he saw the Serafim.
"No one knew about me calling for the healer?" Elder Rose asked Ian, making sure he knew this was not something that he could talk to other recklessly.
"Yes, Elder Rose. I was very careful when I look for the healer," he replied firmly, but he was not very secretive if the news about it already reached Iris without them knowing it.
Elder Rose nodded and then shifted her attention toward Abby, who was crying silently.
"Who is the father of the baby?" Elder Rose asked through her gritted teeth. She was very angry. She couldn’t stop trembling. "Tell me, who is the father of the baby."
Abby bit her lip. She wouldn’t say a single word. Because the moment she said the name, it would be the death of him.
Knowing Abby wouldn’t say it, Elder Rose turned around to ask the same question to Ian. That was why she wanted him to stay, because Abby could be stubborn.
"I don’t know... Elder Rose," Ian replied. He looked a little bit hesitant, thus Elder Rose changed her question.
"Between Cedric and Liam, who do you think is being so close with the Serafim?" Elder Rose asked again.
Ian thought about it for a while. "Cedric." He mentioned Cedric because Abby was not very close with Liam recently, the two of them looked awkward and tended to avoided each other, thus it was Cedric, who was always by her side.
"Drag him here!" Elder Rose roared and Ian immediately went away to get Cedric.
On the other hand, Abby widened her eyes. It was not Cedric, but she couldn’t bring herself to deny it, because it would only leave them with Liam, since the two of them were the only people that actually close to her.
"Elder Rose... please," Abby pleaded, but she didn’t know what to plea anymore. "What is so wrong with this?"
"What is so wrong?" Elder Rose knelt down and pinched her cheek, which made Abby flinched because her nails grazed her skin. "You have done something completely wrong! You have humiliated our Holy Kingdom! You are the Serafim! How could you have an indecent relationship with your own protector and having a child out of wedlock!? You have tarnished our reputation! Your own reputation! This child is an illegitimate child! This child is a bastard!"
Abby cried harder. She couldn’t contain her fear and grievances anymore. Out of instinct she hugged her belly, which only made Elder Rose even more furious.
"You can’t give birth to this child!" Her voice was very cold, as if the baby was a monster.
"Mother!" Abby cried, this was the second time she called her this. The first time she did it, Elder Rose corrected her immediately and made sure she would never repeat the same mistake again. "This is your grandchild!"
"Have I asked you for a grandchild?!" Elder Rose was enraged. "Especially the one with someone below your status? Out of wedlock?!"
=============================
Iris was surprised when she heard Cane’s voice and felt the warmth of his body against her. His familiar scent and the comfort that only he could offer.
"Cane?" Iris turned her body around and looked at his pale complexion, she cupped his face, as he leaned against her touch. He looked weak, but he was awake and that was what matter.
"Where have you been?" Cane repeated the same question again, as he closed his eyes.
He woke up, but he couldn’t find her, only her scent that lingered around this room, especially on him, indicating that Iris had been laying next to him.
"You need to lay down, I will call Grace," Iris said, she helped him to go back to the bed, but Cane didn’t want her to leave.
"No, stay here with me," Cane said, he grabbed her hand, but he was not strong enough to keep her by his side.
