Chapter 311 The beginning of the end...
Lyla
I jolted awake to the sounds of commotion and Ramsey hurriedly pulling on his clothes. The room was still dark, pre-dawn light barely filtering through the curtains.
"What's happening?" I mumbled, still disoriented from sleep.
"We're under attack," Ramsey said tersely. "Get dressed quickly."
That snapped me fully awake. I sat up, pushing hair from my face. "Nathan?"
"Worse." Ramsey strapped on his weapons belt. "A large army of Ferals and their Trinaxes is approaching White Mountain. It's likely the Dark One himself."
The mention of the Trinax sent cold fear through me. If they were here, this wasn't just another battle. This was the war we'd been dreading.
I leapt from bed and dressed frantically, choosing clothes I could fight in—sturdy pants, boots, and a reinforced leather jacket. As I braided my hair back, Ramsey checked his ammunition.
"Ready?" he asked.
I nodded, and we raced from the room. The corridor outside was chaotic with warriors rushing to their positions and civilians being directed to shelter areas.
We found Lenny, Caius, Nanny, and Freya huddled in intense conversation near the command centre. The moment they spotted Ramsey, they turned and bowed in respect.
"How severe is it?" Ramsey demanded.
"Our armies are holding the line for now," Caius replied. "There's been no attack yet. I think they're laying siege."
"Where are the former Ferals?" I asked, scanning the room for Kieran or any of the others who had pledged themselves to me.
"They were among the first responders," Lenny explained. "It was because of them that we knew the Ferals and Trinax were coming. They ran to the border immediately."
I nodded, torn between pride in their loyalty and fear for their safety. They'd fought so hard to regain their humanity—now they were risking it all again.
Nanny approached me, taking my hands in hers. "You must do what you can," she urged. "Remember, you'll be fighting with your elite group. Weaken the Ferals and let them finish the job."
I took a deep breath, considering our options. "Or I can try to turn them normal. I know it seems like too much, but it's our best solution. The more Ferals we convert to our side, the more warriors we'll have and the more vulnerable the Dark One will become."
Nanny's face creased with worry. "The ritual nearly drained you last time, and that was with only three hundred and fifty Ferals. We're talking about hundreds now, maybe thousands."
Before she could continue her protest, Ramsey returned from speaking with a scout who had just arrived. "Lyla, come with me," he called urgently. "There's something you need to see."
I squeezed Nanny's hands reassuringly before following Ramsey out of the command centre. We hurried through the pack house and up a flight of stairs that led to the observation tower. From this vantage point, we could see for miles in every direction.
It was dawn already, and it was bright enough for me to see whatever it was that Ramsey wanted me to see.
The sight that greeted me stole my breath. The northern border of White Mountain territory was lined with Ferals—not dozens or hundreds, but thousands. They stood in perfect formation, unnaturally still for creatures known for their savage unpredictability, and behind them loomed darker shapes with faces that could not be seen – Trinaxes. Each of them seemed to be controlling a particular unit of Ferals. "Goddess," I whispered. "There must be ten thousand of them."
"At least," Ramsey confirmed grimly. "And look there." He pointed to a hill behind the armies where a lone figure stood. Even from this distance, something about that silhouette made my skin crawl. "The Dark One."
"Xander," I breathed.
"Yes," Ramsey nodded. "It seems he's no longer in his human form. In the Xander you know," as he spoke, he placed the binoculars to his eyes again. He looks different. Older and more powerful. At least that's the kind of aura he gives off."
