Ailwin recognized the woman, even though he hadn’t seen her in two decades. He had searched for her extensively after Helena died but had never been able to find her.
"I hope you recognize this woman, Your Majesty," Luis said. "Lady Fiana, Queen Helena’s lady-in-waiting and the sole witness to her murder."
Ailwin snapped back to attention. "Where did you find her?" freewёbnoνel.com
"Your Majesty, as your loyal servant, I have never given up on any matter that concerns our kingdom. Queen Helena’s demise was a tragic incident, and even after two decades, I have not stopped seeking the truth. One of the reasons I returned to the capital this time was because I found important clues and proof of who killed the previous queen. Once we make it clear, I believe Your Majesty will punish the criminal and his family for treason. I, along with all the ministers, demand justice for our queen’s unfortunate demise and the punishment of the traitors."
His words were clearly directed towards Philip and Oriana as traitors. Julien and Arlan exchanged glances; Julien looked worried, but Arlan reassured her to stay calm.
Oriana remained seated, deciding to trust Arlan. If he told her not to worry, it meant he was prepared. He was a Dragon, and if someone tried to harm his mate, she was sure he would burn them alive on the spot. Moreover, she was a demoness and could send Luis to the depths of hell disregarding what others thought about this matter.
But what concerned her was that her grandfather’s name would be branded as a traitor in history. His intentions were not malicious, but he was bound by the responsibility given to their bloodline to protect this world. She wondered what evidence Arlan had that would prove Luis wrong.
As the matter grew more serious, the King’s adviser addressed the three young women. "Young ladies, you may leave."
Anelisa and Katherin sighed with relief and immediately left the royal courtroom after bowing to the king. Erin, however, bowed to the king and then moved to stand next to Oriana’s chair, fulfilling her role as the Crown Princess’ trusted companion.
Lord Walys Ahren and his son eldest son Euron Ahren watched Erin, both proud that she was aware of her responsibilities and unafraid of such incidents. They have raised one righteous, confident, smart and fearless woman.
On one side of Oriana stood Rafal and other side stood Erin, a pair of Ahren siblings. It was like a thorn in Luis’s and some other nobles’ eyes that one of the strongest noble family, Ahrens were always loyal to the King and openly showed their support and loyalty. The older generation was the same and new generation followed them.
This was the reason, Luis planned to marry Erin, the cherished daughter of Ahrens, to his eldest Son Adam to get Ahrens on his side.
As the room settled, Arlan turned to Luis. "And what kind of punishment do you suggest for the traitor?" His demeanor was calm and composed.
Luis offered a light smile, his gaze already showing he considered himself victorious. "Prince Arlan, we will punish the culprit according to the laws of this kingdom, laws that have never shown mercy to criminals."
"Such as?" Arlan asked.
"The entire family of the traitor shall be executed, regardless of whether they are women or children. No mercy shall be shown. If we are lenient, future traitors won’t hesitate to harm the royal family again," Luis answered, his gaze shifting to Oriana. "The Verners are traitors and must be punished. Philip Verner is dead, but Oriana Verner won’t be spared, even if she is a Crown Princess. She would be...."
"Luis Mortiemer," Arlan interrupted him, "address the Crown Princess of this kingdom with respect. She is still a Crown Princess. You have yet to prove her family guilty, and His Majesty has yet to decide the punishment." His gaze darkened, "But I promise you, once the guilt is proven, I will punish the traitor with my own hands."
Luis scoffed internally but obeyed. "Apologies, Your Highness. I will keep that in mind. Now, let’s hear from this woman what she witnessed back then and who killed the queen." He turned to the frail woman kneeling on the floor. "Lady Fiana, please tell His Majesty what you saw that night, the night that scared you and made you run away."
The woman, dressed in shabby clothes with skin marked by scars, looked like she had been living in poor conditions. She bowed to the king. "Your Majesty, forgive me...."
Ailwin glared at her. "Speak."
The woman trembled at the king’s loud voice. "I... will tell you what happened that night and what I saw."
