They went to the restaurant, where they were directed to the reserved table. Erin turned to Lucian, who stopped at the entrance. "Join us."
"It’s fine," he declined.
"Though a bodyguard, you are still a nobleman. I can’t possibly let you stay out here," she insisted and went inside.
Lucian quietly followed her. Using his nobleman status, he had helped her with the footwear, and now she was using the same reasoning to ask him to eat with her.
They had a peaceful meal where no one talked much, except for Bree, who occasionally spoke when she needed to serve food onto Erin’s plate.
After the meal, they roamed around a few more places, stopping once in a while to watch roadside plays and folk dances performed by various groups. Erin made sure to instruct Bree to put money in the baskets of those performing groups, understanding it was their only way of earning a living.
Lucian standing near her, did his job to protect her with utmost dedication.
By the time they returned to Ahrens, the sun had already set, and the sky was covered in darkness with stars shining brightly. Stopping in front of Erin’s residence, Lucian opened the carriage door for her and offered his leather-covered arm for support as she stepped down, while Bree followed on her own.
"Carry all this inside," Erin instructed her servants.
Along with other servants, Bree started carrying everything inside, as she needed to instruct servants to be careful and where to keep it. Erin and Lucian were left alone.
She looked at him, the awkwardness palpable in the air, but she spoke like her usual self, "Now, you are no longer my bodyguard."
Lucian nodded, looking straight into her eyes. There was no need to be polite, as his work as her bodyguard was over.
"When are you returning to the northeast?" she asked.
"Soon. Once I take care of everything here."
Erin hummed and pulled something from the small silk bag she was holding. There was a small wooden box. "This is for you. A parting gift for my bodyguard."
To her surprise, he didn’t reject it. Holding the box in his hand, he opened it to reveal a tiny, beautiful green jade pendant.
Erin explained, "This is to wish you good luck in what you do in the future. I wish you success in everything you do after this."
He closed the box and looked back at her. "Thank you." At this moment, he didn’t act like her bodyguard but a nobleman, her equal.
As there was nothing more to say, Erin spoke, "Well, then. Goodbye."
’Goodbye’ seemed to be the right word as there was no need for them to see each other again.
"There is a reason why I returned today to be your bodyguard," he said, taking her by surprise. She thought he would just say goodbye and leave, but it seemed like there was something he wanted to say.
He sure can talk, but he chose to stay quiet.
