Dashiell was blown away by his first look at Kingston's deceitfulness. The latter showed up on the same electric scooter as Matthew, so they had to be close.
Besides that, Matthew didn't hesitate to step up for Kingston. Who would go out of their way like that these days unless they were friends?
Yet, Kingston actually had the nerve to say they weren't friends. Who would believe that?
Dashiell's eyes were blazing with anger. "What else do you want, Kingston? We're already on our knees begging you. What will it take for you to get your friend to save us?"
Kingston knew Dashiell wouldn't believe it, but Matthew wasn't really his friend. He was here for Plague Compendium and Miracle Healing Banner.
Regardless, it was already a done deal, so it didn't matter if Dashiell believed it or not. As Kingston thought so, he just kept quiet.
Matthew stepped out. "Whether I'm Kingston's friend or not, I'm not helping you all. I'm scared you'll turn on me."
After saying that, Matthew waved at Kingston. "Aren't you off to the poultry farm? Let's go."
Kingston hummed in acknowledgment. As he hopped on the electric scooter, Matthew quickly jumped on the back. The scooter took off, zooming away with both of them.
The eight people were left kneeling on the ground, surrounded by a crowd that glanced at one another.
…
After getting out of the town, the scooter sped up. The wind made their clothes rustle, and neither of them spoke.
Ten minutes later, Kingston couldn't help himself and said, "Thanks for your help."
Smiling, Matthew teased, "Didn't you say you're the ungrateful type? Saying thanks feels a bit out of character for you, doesn't it?"
Out of character? Kingston sported a scornful look. "Even though you helped me, I won't return the favor. I'm still ungrateful, so my character is pretty consistent."
Matthew figured the task was more complicated this time, but he wasn't stressed about it. "Yes. Your ungrateful character is pretty solid. Still, I don't get it. As a plague doctor, you get so much hate, so why are you still holding onto Plague Compendium and Miracle Healing Banner?"
Kingston went quiet. There were things he couldn't tell anyone, and he was already overwhelmed by them. At that point, he just grew numb to them, carrying the weight like second nature.
The scooter eventually came to a halt in front of the poultry farm.
