462.Chapter 462
Eliza had no idea what Sophie had just instructed. She merely cast a faint glance at Annie, who was dashing away from the carriage.
Adeline called out, and Eliza redirected her attention, stepping into the Marquis’s estate, a place she hadn’t visited in quite some time.
“Your Grace has arrived, Adeline announced loudly.
In order to add some luster to the somewhat embarrassing wedding at the Marquis’s estate, Adeline cast aside her inner displeasure and decided to give Eliza a grand welcome.
Adeline’s mind was working quickly now. As the hostess, she knew that the more distinguished the guests at her party, the more honor it brought to her family. Since Eliza had come in person, Adeline was determined to make the most of it. “Welcome, Your Grace,” the guests murmured, rising from their seats in surprise and greeting Eliza with respectful bows. In the corner, a few guests whispered among themselves as they bowed.
“Why has Your Grace come? Today’s event at the Marquis’s estate is just a small party to welcome a concubine. Is it worth Your Grace’s presence?”
“You must be new to Hasen City. Lord Caleb is marrying Sophie, who was Your Grace’s sister before she became a nun.” “Oh, I see. So, Your Grace must be here to support Sophie.”
“No, you’re mistaken again. Their relationship is far from harmonious.*
“Huh? Why is that?”
“Your Grace is a legitimate daughter, while Sophie is a bastard child.”
“Lord Caleb is marrying the Duke of Mowbay’s illegitimate daughter?”
“That’s correct. And Lord Caleb was once Your Grace’s fiancé. Now, he’s taking a bastard daughter as his concubine. Quite a twist, isn’t it?”
“So the situation is this complicated?”
“You really haven’t heard anything? You’ve just arrived in Hasen City. I suggest you keep your ears open, or you might find yourself in trouble.”
“There are some things in Hasen City that everyone knows but pretends not to. Anyway, the relationship between Your Grace and Sophie is not as simple as you think.”
“So Your Grace’s presence here today is not a friendly one?”
The guests continued to murmur and speculate, but Eliza remained unfazed, her expression calm and composed. Adeline, walking beside Eliza, felt inexplicably pleased. Although the guests were not bowing to her, she felt a sense of satisfaction.
This was far more honorable than Caleb marrying a bastard daughter as a concubine. After all, Eliza was Adeline’s own niece. Even though Adeline didn’t particularly like Eliza, that was the reality. No matter how much Eliza might deny it, she was still related to the Marquis’s estate.
Moreover, Eliza had almost married Caleb once. In Adeline’s view, that glory rightfully belonged to the Marquis’s estate. With a warm smile, Adeline said to Eliza and Diana, “Your Grace, Miss Baker, the wedding is about to begin. Shall we take our seats now?”
Eliza glanced at Adeline’s smug smile but said nothing, simply looking at the guests and greeting them. “Good day to you all. Let’s sit.”
According to tradition, given Eliza’s high status, she was naturally entitled to sit at the head table. After all, in Bortenland, there were only a handful of people with higher status than Eliza, and those individuals would never deign to attend such a minor wedding at the Marquis’s estate.
So, whether Adeline liked it or not, the seat of honor at the head table had to be given to Eliza. Eliza sat down without hesitation, and Diana took her place beside her.
Dale immediately shook his head. “No, Miss Baker, of course not. Thank you for coming all this way. As Your Grace’s close friend, you are more than welcome to sit here.”
