620.Chapter 620
“Really? Anthony, you’re so generous! Your father must be proud of you,”
Rafe exclaimed, his face lighting up with exaggerated excitement, as if genuinely moved by Anthony’s promises.
But Anthony couldn’t help but feel there was a trace of mockery hidden in his words.
He paused briefly, then continued trying to win Rafe over. “Of course it’s true. As you said, I’m the fourth son of the Duke’s estate. My word is as good as gold. You can rest assured that once I’m up there, Ion’t go back on my promises.”
“Alright, since you say so, Anthony, I guess I can relax. All I need to do is pull you up, right?”
“That’s right, just pull me up,” Anthony confirmed, keeping his tone steady.
Anthony didn’t say anything more.
As for what would happen once he was up, Anthony had no concerns at all.
He had come prepared, carrying plenty of poisons with him. Once he was back on solid ground, he was confident he could take Rafe down in one swift move!
By then, it would be hard to say who would be begging whom.
Anthony realized that despite all his talking, the boy squatting above him hadn’t moved an inch. He just kept staring down with that infuriating grin.
Dangling from the cliff, Anthony felt a chill run through him. His heart sank like a stone.
“You said you’d pull me up! What are you waiting for?” Anthony barked, his voice edged with desperation.
Rafe tilted his head, his face the picture of innocence. “Oh, I did promise you. But I also promised your sister. She told me to kill you. So, how about this? You die first, and then I’ll pull you up. Fair deal, right?”
Anthony’s face twisted in fury. “You’re messing with me?”
Rafe immediately shook his head, his tone dripping with mock sincerity. “No, no, Anthony, you’ve got it all wrong. I really do plan to pull you up. It’s just… You never said if I should pull you up alive or dead. Since I promised your sister first, I’ll have to wait until you’re dead before I can pull you up. Makes sense, doesn’t it?”
“You-!” Anthony’s voice caught in his throat, his rage momentarily rendering him speechless.
His face flushed an alarming shade of blue as his grip on the cliff edge began to falter. Every second felt like an eternity, his arms trembling under the strain. If this dragged on any longer, he wouldn’t be able to hold on and would inevitably fall to his death.
Anthony gritted his teeth, barely holding back his anger. “What the hell do you want from me? What more do you want?” He thought Rafe was just being greedy, and his promises weren’t enticing enough.
But Rafe’s response shut him down completely. “I don’t want anything from you.”
Rafe crouched at the edge of the cliff, his frail figure looking like it could be swept away by the wind at any moment. Yet, he remained as steady as a rock, perched above Anthony’s head. He stared at Anthony, who was clearly terrified but still clinging to his pride, trying to act dignified even with his life hanging by a thread. With a mocking smile, Rafe sneered, “You’re the one who started throwing offers around. I never said I wanted anything. I was just messing with you. Don’t tell me you actually believed it? No way, right? No way.”
“You…” Anthony’s eyes burned with rage, but before he could say more, his fingers slipped against the jagged rock.
His heart nearly stopped as he realized how close he was to losing his grip entirely.
“You know who I am, and you still dare to side with Eliza to kill me? Are you not afraid of dragging yourself into this mess, being wanted by the authorities, and hunted down by the Duke’s estate?” Anthony roared, his voice filled with rage.
‘If reasoning won’t work, then I’ll have to play hardball!‘ he thought.
Anthony’s tone turned sharp and threatening as he tried to intimidate Rafe.
But to his surprise, Rafe didn’t even bat an eye. His threats were as useless as trying to scare a cat with a feather.
The sheer precision and cold calculation of it sent shivers down Anthony’s spine. How could someone so young be so ruthless?
“Get out here! I’m your brother, your own flesh and blood! You’d really go so far as to have me killed? Aren’t you afraid of divine punishment for this act of betrayal?”
