Mollie and Carson were both his kids. It turned out Antonio always knew he favored his son.
When Mollie sought the same love, Antonio would wave her away, telling her, “You’re just a girl. You can’t measure up to Carson. Even after you’re married, Carson will always come first!”
So when he was talking about fairness now, I didn’t buy it, and neither did Mollic.
“I’d rather be dead than with you! I don’t even have a dad!” Mollie shouted at him.
Antonio was caught off guard by Mollie’s hatred, and it lit his fuse. “You’re both my kids, but you’re not as thoughtful as Carson! You’re just as shameless as your mom!”
Mollie might not have grasped every bit of Antonio’s harsh words, but she got that they weren’t nice things to say.
Seeing that neither Mollie nor I were biting. Antonio laid his cards on the table. “Grace, I know you haven’t moved on. That’s why you’re still single. We had our moments, and I won’t forget them. After I split up with Caroline, I’ll marry you again, but you’ve got to make sure Tristan gets me the help I need…”
After all the trouble, what he was truly after was his own benefit.
Facing the person who was once so close yet now so distant, I wondered what I ever found appealing about him.
A selfish guy like him should just go down with Caroline!
Right then, his phone buzzed with an email.
Once he read it, his whole look toward me shifted.
His intense affection was overwhelming. It turned my stomach.
“Grace, you’ve been there for Carson and me without ever asking for anything. Why keep it from me? I always knew you still had feelings for me. I’m leaving Caroline, and I promise you the most amazing wedding you could ever imagine.”
It turned out that Duncan couldn’t stand how Antonio was treating me, so he put all the evidence right in front of him.
All the dirt on Caroline and the schemes she’d cooked up against me were right there.
The minute Antonio was out of sight, I grabbed Mollie and we made our exit.
Before we left, I asked Mollie in a hushed voice, “Do you want me to take Carson with us?”
