Megan and Jeanne were both confused and frustrated, unable to understand why things had turned out this way. The only explanation that seemed to make sense was the one they had come up with, and it was the only thing giving them any comfort.
Jeanne looked at Megan and said softly, "Even if we want to expose Nolan, it's not possible right now. The Baxter family has made such a big deal out of this, and even if everyone knows the truth, no one will speak up. It's all about keeping up appearances."
"So, I guess we'll have to just watch Nolan make a fool of himself," Jeanne added.
Jeanne said this, but her eyes showed she was starting to question Nolan's real identity, even though she didn't say anything.
Megan was fuming. "This is ridiculous! We have to watch Nolan's stupid show just to protect the Baxter family's image. It's really annoying.
"Alright. We'll avoid upsetting the Baxter family. But I'm not letting Nolan look good in front of Audrey. Once this is over, we'll go find Audrey and tell her the truth. She needs to know that Nolan is just a pathetic pretender."
Megan was really annoyed with Nolan. It wasn't just because he was showing off, but also because he was getting close to Audrey, which made her jealous.
When Archie made his bid, everyone else went quiet. No one else seemed willing to bid higher.
Nolan wasn't disappointed, though. He probably expected this. He hadn't revealed his full identity, just a special seal that only the top bidders knew about. If they had known who he really was, the price might have gone even higher.
Also, it seemed like people didn't want to upset the Baxter family. The Baxters were big shots in Bellington, and no one wanted to make them angry unless they had to.
Plus, with the Baxters promising to owe a favor, the bidders probably felt like they were getting a good deal.
