635.Chapter 635
“Father!”
Benedict shot to his feet, his voice filled with disbelief. “Fine, you’ve always favored Sophie, but Eliza is your daughter too- our sister! How can you even say you want to kill her?”
“Why wouldn’t I?” Gabriel’s gaze turned icy, his tone sharp and unrelenting. “Everything she has, she owes to me. If it weren t for my so–called mercy, do you think she’d still be alive today?”
Benedict froze, staring at his father in shock. “What do you mean by that, Father? What are you saying?”
‘Mercy? What does he mean by that? Has Father always wanted Eliza dead?
“Exactly what it sounds like.” Gabriel didn’t bother hiding his murderous intent anymore. His voice was cold as he warned,” You’re my chosen heir, Benedict. Don’t make things harder for me.”
“If it weren’t for you, I would’ve dealt with that ungrateful girl long ago. I spared her, and yet she keeps defying me, over and over again!”
Gabriel’s fury boiled over, his patience completely gone. He issued a final warning to Benedict, “If she dares cross me again, I’ll make her regret ever being born into the Stonor family!”
Back then, he had only needed to operate from the shadows to bring down the entire Padilla family in a single night. Surely, a teenage girl wouldn’t be a challenge for him now.
Benedict froze, his breath catching as the weight of those words hit him.
He stood there, his tall and upright figure seeming to falter under the crushing realization, his shoulders slumping slightly. It felt as though a string deep inside him had snapped, leaving him momentarily paralyzed.
So, it seemed the family had already fallen apart without him even realizing it.
Benedict found it both laughable and oddly relieving.
Eliza had been right to leave the Stonor family.
And thankfully, he hadn’t managed to convince her to return back then. Otherwise, she might have already fallen victim to their father’s venomous schemes.
They say even wild beasts protect their young, but their father’s heart was pure poison.
After watching his eldest son leave, Gabriel immediately summoned someone to prepare ink for him. Without hesitation, he spread out the paper and let his brush dance across it, quickly writing three letters.
Once the letters were sealed in their envelopes, he called for the butler.
“Take these letters and deliver them personally. Make sure they go straight to the Grand Tutor, Minister of Rites, and Grand Imperial Doctor.”
“Yes, my lord. I’ll leave at once!”
The butler was just about to turn and leave when Gabriel suddenly stopped him. “Wait.”
Frowning slightly, Gabriel then wrote two more letters. “These two are for the Marquis’s estate and Chancellor’s residence.” The Chancellor was Fletcher.
It was clear that Gabriel wanted to gauge where these two stood as well.
Clutching the letters, the butler changed into plain clothes and hurried out of the Duke’s estate.
A shadowy figure trailed behind the butler as he left the Duke’s estate, silently observing and noting down every residence he visited.
At most of the households, the butler was welcomed inside as soon as he identified himself as a representative of the Stonor family.
The Marquis’s estate, however, was an exception. No matter how persistently he knocked, the doors remained firmly shut, and no one answered.
Left with no other choice, the butler returned to the Duke’s estate, the undelivered letter still in his possession.
“The Marquis refused to see you?” Gabriel asked, his expression darkening with displeasure.
The butler hesitated before replying, “I’m not s Successfully unlocked! arquis’s estate seemed completely locked down today. I knocked for ages, but there was!.

Gabriel let out a cold chuckle, dismissing the concern. “No one answered? Hah, they’re just being cautious. They must’ve already caught wind of the palace rumors, just like I have, and decided to shut their doors.”
That was Gabriel’s interpretation of the situation.

The butler, however, couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that something wasn’t quite right.
‘No, I’m probably overthinking it, he told himself, trying to brush off the unease.
But little did he know, the Marquis’s estate was indeed as strange as he feared–if not more so.
“Sophie… Sophie, I’ve gotten you everything you wanted. Please, just let me see Caleb! Just once, I’m begging your If Eliza were here to witness this, she’d be utterly stunned.
Everyone knew Adeline’s temperament. When Sophie first entered the Stonor family Adeline had made her life a living hell. And yet now, here she was, standing before Sophie like a lowly servant, her face filled with unease as she tried to curry favor
Sophie ran her fingers over the shimmering, exquisitely crafted emerald pieces, their brilliance reflecting her cold gaze. But in the next moment, she suddenly picked one up and smashed it to the ground with a sharp track.
One by one, Sophie shattered the emerald pieces.
Each crash louder than the last, until nothing but shards remained scattered across the floor.
Fixing Adeline with a chilling stare, Sophie sneered, “No, Adeline, this junk is nowhere near good enough. I asked for the finest emerald, the very best! And you bring me this trash?”
Adeline’s heart ached at the sight of the shattered emerald, but she forced herself to hold back her tears. “I’ll send someone to find better ones! I’ll get them as soon as possible. But please, I haven’t seen Caleb in days! Just let me see him, even for a moment, I’m begging you!”
