636.Chapter 636
“Caleb! Mom’s here to see you! Caleb?” When Adeline pushed open Caleb’s door and saw the frail, skeletal figure lying on the bed, her legs nearly gave out beneath her.
“My son!” Adeline let out a piercing cry and stumbled to Caleb’s bedside, tears streaming uncontrollably down her face.
“Mom… why are you here?” The gaunt Caleb, barely recognizable, forced himself to wake up at the sound of his mother’s voice.
“Caleb, what happened to you? That wretched… that Sophie! What has she done to you this time? It’s only been a few days, and look at you–how did you end up like this?!”
Adeline almost cursed out loud, but the thought of Sophie’s cruel methods made her swallow her words. She could only suppress her fury and hatred, her heart aching for her suffering son.
“Mom, don’t talk about Sophie like that. She hasn’t done anything to hurt me–she’s saving me! If it weren’t for her mystic arts, I’d probably be dead from the pain by now. Look at me, Mom. I’m fine now. I don’t feel any pain at all… just a little tired. So… very tired.”
‘What kind of nonsense magic is this! Adeline was so furious she wished she could rip Sophie to shreds.
That wretched woman must have used some kind of parasite or poison on Caleb! She had already driven her precious son to the brink of death, yet somehow, she had him convinced she was his savior!
It was both infuriating and terrifying.
Adeline, a sheltered woman of the household, had no understanding of the sinister methods people outside could employ.
But little did she know, her angry suspicions were spot on.
Sophie had indeed used a parasite on Caleb.
And it wasn’t just parasites–she had poisoned him too.
Just like her mother, Eliza, had once poisoned Gilbert and his men, Sophie had used the same venom on Caleb.
Adeline had seen the “bridal gift” Eliza gave Sophie during the wedding–a Poisonous Flower–and knew exactly what it looked like. She had been on high alert ever since, trying to guard the household against Sophie’s schemes.
But no matter how cautious she was, she couldn’t stop Sophie from repeatedly luring Caleb out and targeting him outside the estate.
Everywhere Caleb went, everything he touched, wore, or even just passed by, Sophie had sprinkled with poison powder made from the Poisonous Flower.
Again and again, Caleb fell into her traps.
The very day Caleb collapsed, Sophie wasted no time planting a parasite inside him.
And so, the Marquis’s estate descended into a living nightmare.
Sophie knew Adeline’s greatest weakness was her love for her son. Using Caleb as leverage, she threatened Adeline and Dale, forcing them to comply with her every demand. For the past half month, Sophie had ruled the estate as if it were her
own.
“Defy me, and I’ll make sure your precious wife and son die with me,” Sophie sneered, presenting a basin filled with Caleb’s blood and flesh. The once–proud Marquis, Dale, had no choice but to suppress his fury and obey her every command.
Sophie wasn’t taking any chances.
She knew Dale wasn’t someone easily dealt with, so she completely barred him from seeing Caleb. Instead, she allowed Adeline to visit him, but only two or three times, and each visit left Adeline in tears, her heart shattered.
Caught between his son’s suffering and his wife’s pain, Dale could only swallow his anger and endure.
Now, the entire Marquis’s estate had shut its doors to visitors.
Previously, people from the Duke’s estate had tried to visit Sophie, but she refused to see any of them.
After all, she had already taken control of the Marquis’s estate–why should she care about the Duke’s estate?
What, go back and endure her father’s temper again? Not a chance.
But keeping the Nevill family locked up indefin something unusual.
his dragged on, outsiders might start noticing
Successfully unlocked!
Thus, Sophie allowed Dale and two or three servants to leave for errands, but no one else was permitted to enter or exit.
At least not until she had used parasites to take full control of everyone in the Marquis’s estate.
That was why, when the Duke’s estate steward came knocking, no one dared to respond.
