643.Chapter 643
Eliza’s words plunged the court into a dead, stifling silence. The ministers held their breath, afraid to even look at Theodore.
That was bold of her. The Holy Lady had nerves of steel.
Her words were just shy of outright declaring, “Theodore, you’ve betrayed the King!” The weight of Eliza’s words was no lighter than Theodore’s earlier accusation of treason against her.
But while Theodore’s accusations were baseless conjecture, Eliza’s words pointed squarely at what was plain for all to see.
Otherwise, why else would Theodore be here, meddling in this matter? Everyone knew this was a confrontation between the Holy Lady and the Duke of Mowbay.
The King was willing to grant the request, and Gabriel himself hadn’t even stepped forward. Yet, Theodore stubbornly refused to back down. Who would believe this wasn’t at Gabriel’s behest?
“Nonsense,” Theodore roared, trembling with rage. “I have served through three reigns with unwavering loyalty to the former kings and now His Majesty! Even in death, I would never betray my King! The Holy Lady’s words are a blatant insult to my devotion to the crown.”
not
Theodore turned to Magnus and said indignantly, “Your Majesty, if the Holy Lady made to explain herself and clear my name, then I shall end my life in this hall to prove my innocence!”
“Theodore, must it come to this?” Magnus sighed deeply, exasperated with the old
statesman.
“I never thought a respected statesman with three reigns of experience would abandon reason for theatrics and rely on his age and seniority, even threatening to take his own life,” Nolan said. “But the real question is, who exactly is he trying to intimidate? And who is pulling the strings behind him?”
As the Prince Regent and a war hero, Nolan’s achievements far surpassed the honor of a senior statesman who has served through three reigns. If he hadn’t led the army to quell external threats in just a few years, Theodore might not even have a seat in court today.
Magnus had to tread carefully, but Nolan had no such reservations.
‘He’s just an old man with one foot in the grave. How dare he bully Serenity? Does he think he could pick on her just because she’s young and kind?‘ Nolan thought.
“Your Highness! On what grounds do you accuse me of such things? When have I ever thrown my weight around because of my seniority?” Theodore snapped.
“Because you believe it fair to hurl unfounded accusations at a young girl but not for

her to give you a taste of your own medicine,” Nolan countered, his tone cold and his eyes full of scorn. “Do you think you can twist the facts and get away with it? Do you take me for a fool?”
“You-”
“Cut the nonsense! If you value your reputation, then back down now. Spare us this talk of dying to prove your loyalty. Otherwise, I will believe that you are indeed acting under someone’s order, using this matter as an excuse to threaten His Majesty and betray your sovereign.”
Nolan let out a cold laugh, his sharp gaze sweeping across the Duke of Mowbay and his faction. He warned, “And if that is truly the case, I’ll personally see to it that the traitor is dealt with and their clan wiped out from history.”
In that instant, Eliza felt a calm settle over her. She looked up at Nolan, eyes wide with immense gratitude. Eliza knew her age and standing were no match for Theodore’s. So, after delivering a sharp retort, she chose to hold her tongue.
Nolan had told her beforehand to leave this man to him. And clearly, of all the men in this court, only the Prince Regent could suppress a figure like Theodore.
Theodore’s hunched body trembled slightly. He sighed and cast a glance at Eliza- calm and composed at the center of the hall–before shooting a subtle look toward Gabriel. With a slight shake of his head, he gave up.
‘Enough. Let’s stop here,’ Theodore thought to himself.
After all, the Holy Lady’s decision to change her last name had nothing to do with him. If Gabriel hadn’t asked him to return a favor the night before, he wouldn’t have gotten involved in this at all.
He had done all he could. Magnus might see him as a threat if he pushed any further, and the repercussions wouldn’t be any better than Godfrey’s.
In fact, he would be in an even worse plight. Godfrey had only angered the King, but Theodore had offended even Nolan.
If Nolan said he would kill, he would do it without so much as a blink. It wasn’t worth dragging himself and his family down just to return a favor.
Gabriel’s expression darkened as he caught the meaning in Theodore’s eyes. He turned his head, scanning the court for the official he had secretly arranged to back him up–the Chief Inspector. But after looking around, Gabriel realized he hadn’t shown
‘What’s going on?‘ Gabriel wondered.
Gabriel’s gaze darted to his eldest son, Benedict, the Deputy Inspector, his eyes narrowing with suspicion.
Noticing his father’s piercing stare, Benedict casually gestured that the Chief Inspector was sick and offered no further help. Even when Gabriel glared at him,

Benedict didn’t budge.
Fury surged in Gabriel’s chest. If he couldn’t tell that his own son had sabotaged his plan, all his years as Duke of Mowbay would have been for nothing.
