“Your Grace,” a civil official said eagerly. “The Duke of Mowbay has clearly repented. Perhaps you should give him a chance?”

“Indeed, it was just a momentary lapse in judgment,” another chimed in. “You know as well as we do how much the Duke once cherished and doted on you. That alone proves he’s a good father at heart.”

“To err is human. Since Lord Mowbay has already admitted his mistakes, why not sit down and talk things out as father and daughter? Why must you insist on changing your last name?” added another civil official.

“Your Grace, please give him a chance,” a minister implored. “At the end of the day, he’s still your father.”

Sensing an opportunity, the civil officials quickly rallied around Gabriel, pleading with Eliza to forgive him. Their words sounded heartfelt and sincere, and to anyone who didn’t know better, it might have seemed like they genuinely cared for her.

Had Eliza not known the truth behind the swap, there might have been the slightest

chance she would have believed them. But now…

“Lord Mowbay,” Eliza suddenly spoke, her smooth voice cutting through the civil officials‘ endless barrage of pleas. The court fell silent.

Eliza continued, “I once thought you simply didn’t like me. Maybe you just preferred the illegitimate daughter you brought home. That’s why you treated me like I didn’t matter and pampered her. I thought that was the whole story. But later, I came to realize it wasn’t just that.”

With unfeeling eyes, Eliza stared at Gabriel, who was kneeling on the ground. She said coldly, “You, the Duke of Mowbay, are nothing but a complete hypocrite. The person you should be most ashamed to face is my mother, Caroline Stonor. You deceived and betrayed her and never once atoned for it.”

Gabriel felt a growing sense of unease. He couldn’t shake the feeling that Eliza already knew something. ‘What exactly is she planning to do?‘ he wondered.

“Father,” Eliza said chillingly. “You say you’ve repented. Perfect. I have a few questions I’d like to ask. If you can answer them honestly without an ounce of deceit, I will drop the matter of changing my last name. How about that?”

At this point, the ministers kept quiet, giving the father and daughter space for a confrontation.

“Of course, that’s true,” Gabriel replied without hesitation. “Everyone in Hasen City knows this. When your mother was gravely ill, I even summoned the royal physician to

treat her.”

“Indeed, Your Grace,” a civil official said. “I remember sending a physician from my
