The Lady Nun Vows Revenge novel Chapter 645

645.Chapter 645

Father?a furious voice demanded.

Benedict could no longer care that they were still in court. He stormed forward

without hesitation and stopped right in front of Gabriel, eyes wide with disbelief. What Eliza saidIs it true?

The ministers and even the King perked up their ears, holding their breath in

anticipation.

It’s not true,” Gabriel hissed through gritted teeth and blatantly denied. There is no illegitimate son. Absolutely not!

He finally understood why he was so on edge earlier. Eliza had found out about the child swap all those years ago.

It must have been Mary, that old nun! Who else could have told her?Gabriel thought.

He was certain of it.

Back then, he had made sure to silence almost everyone who knew about the affair, including the child and that woman. The only person still alive who knew the truth was Mary.

Nevertheless, Gabriel was unfazed. Even if Eliza knew about it, she had no evidence. She could expose him right before the King, the Prince Regent, and every minister in this court, but he would simply deny it to his last breath.

Eliza, how could you accuse your father of this?Gabriel cried, his voice trembling.Yes, I made a mistake, but it was just that one time. Must you hold it against me

forever?

As he spoke, a tear streamed down his otherwise stoic face.

Some ministers shook their heads in sympathy, thinking, If the Duke of Mowbay is a philandering man, why hasn’t he had any mistresses? In a city where almost every nobleman kept multiple wives, he remained faithful to Caroline for over a decade after her death. To this day, he never remarried.

The Duke already admitted that his illegitimate daughter was the result of a onetime lapse in judgment. Surely, such devotion was enough to prove the Duke’s true feelings for Caroline.

With these thoughts in mind, the ministers were ready to step forward and persuade Eliza to forgive her father. But before they could speak, the King beat them to it.

Magnus cleared his throat and, with a serious expression, said, Holy Lady, you cannot accuse your father without proof successfully unlocked! to quickly bring forward the

evidence if she had any.

He was especially intrigued by what Eliza had told him yesterday in the imperial study -about someone who looked strikingly like Gabriel. He couldn’t help but wonder, Just

how alike could they be?

At that moment, Alaric received the cue from Nolan. He immediately stepped forward and said, Yes, Your Grace. If what you claim is true, then prove it. Let everyone see so the Duke may no longer deny it.

The message was clear. The ministers who had been eager to defend Gabriel promptly bit their tongues. They figured they would wait and see. If Eliza had no proof, she would lose credibility, and they could criticize her without restraint.

Perhaps they could even strip the Holy Lady of her title, just as the Duke instructed.

Contrary to their expectations, Eliza remained unruffled. She smiled and said calmly,Your Majesty, the evidence is waiting outside. You may summon him now.

Gabriel furrowed his brow. Something was amiss.

Benedict, too, had heard what Eliza said. If he had to choose whom to believe, he would pick his sister in a heartbeat. That was why he was now consumed with anger. He stared at his father, still kneeling on the floor.

The King’s order was followed by James’s announcement, and the sound of footsteps grew louder outside. Gasps echoed through the hall. Benedict found himself unable to lift his head to look at the figure stepping through the doors.

Father, why don’t you turn around and take a look?Eliza asked coldly. Are you afraid?

Eliza’s voice was directed at Gabriel, but to Benedict, it felt like her question was meant for him. Holding back his emotions, he slowly raised his head.

When he saw the young man beside his sister, the sight of his painfully familiar face triggered a flood of intrusive thoughts.

Now you understand why I refused to come home.

Now you see the gravity of your mistake.

Still think you’re a good brother?

Benedict Stonor, have you truly done right by our mother?

No, I’m not,” Benedict cried. Mother, I’ve failed you! I’m sorry

Benedict suddenly broke down. He punched Gabriel square in the face, sending him crashing to the floor. Then, he ran out of the hall like a madman, sobbing and shouting uncontrollably.

On his way out, he bumped into a minister and stumbled, his head slamming into the ground. Yet, he didn’t seem to feel a thing. Tears streamed down his face as he got on his feet and staggered away. Mother, I was wronghe bawled.

Pathetic,Rafe muttered under his breath, casting a sidelong glance at Benedict.

Eliza shot him a pointed look.

He immediately straightened up, then respectfully dropped to one knee and bowed.
