653.Chapter 653
“No! No, I didn’t! I didn’t look for anyone!” Adeline frantically waved her hands, her voice trembling with panic.
She cursed inwardly, her heart sinking. ‘Damn it! Why did Sophie have to come back so soon? How am I supposed to fool her now?‘
If Sophie found out she had gone to see Eliza, she might go completely insane and kill them all.
“Speak! Who exactly did you go to see?” Sophie stormed up to her, grabbing her hair and slamming her to the ground. Her voice was sharp, dripping with menace.
“Please! Stop! I’ll tell you everything!” Adeline cried out, clutching her head as her cheek burned with pain.
“I went to the Duke’s estate! I just… I just wanted to talk to Gabriel,” she sobbed, her voice cracking. “But I swear, I didn’t say anything about you or the estate’s affairs! If you don’t believe me, you can ask him yourself!”
Sophie’s eyes narrowed. With such a flimsy excuse, did Adeline really think she’d fall for that?
Sophie’s slap landed hard on Adeline’s cheek, the sound echoing in the room. She yanked her hair again, her expression dark and unforgiving. “Just wanted to talk? Do you take me for a fool?”
“Looks like you won’t tell the truth unless I teach you a lesson.” Sophie’s voice was cold as she straightened up, rolling up the sleeve of her right arm.
A greenish–blue snake, as thick as a finger, coiled around her arm. Its scales shimmered ominously, coiled tightly like a living weapon. Its sudden appearance made Adeline’s blood run cold.
“Ah!” Adeline screamed, her face draining of color. “What… what are you doing?”
“Sophie! I’m your mother–in–law! You can’t do this to me!” Adeline’s voice was shrill, her desperation palpable.
Sophie sneered, her tone mocking. “Relax. I’m not going to kill you. That would be too easy. I want you to stay alive and learn what it means to beg for death.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the snake slithered off her arm, its movements unnervingly deliberate as it made its way onto Adeline’s body.
The next moment, the room was filled with Adeline’s blood–curdling screams.
“Adeline!”

Dale had barely stepped foot into the estate when Adeline’s piercing scream sent him bolting into the room without a second thought.
“My lord, help me! There’s a snake. It’s venomous and biting me!”

Hearing Dale’s voice, Adeline, curled up on the floor, felt a glimmer of hope, as if she had finally found her lifeline. She wanted to crawl toward him, but the excruciating pain kept her frozen in place.
The snake’s fangs were still sunk deep into her flesh, its grip unrelenting.
