“I’m loyal to you, Jessica,” Garbisch said. Whatever she did, he believed she was right.

He used to believe that serving the country and its people meant being rigidly upright and unbending.

Now he realized that it was never about being rigid or stubborn.

He took after their father–a military man through and through–when it came to thinking. But his mother was the sharper one.

Jessica got their mother’s keen mind and even outshone her.

Garbisch thought to himself, “Jessica’s always right. She protects the Yates family, our grandfather, me, and everyone.”

Then he said, “I don’t want to be stubborn anymore. As long as it doesn’t hurt ordinary folks, I’ll go with the flow.”
