Hank froze briefly. Then, he abruptly turned around and coughed.
Zane stood not far down the corridor, and he had a somber yet calm expression. He coughed lightly.
Hank's eyes widened in shock, and his ears soon turned inexplicably flushed. Next was a surge of indescribable embarrassment and frustration.
He'd be as dumb as Caleb if he didn't realize Shannon had set him up on purpose. He shot Shannon a glare before stomping off and quickening his pace.
Zane watched Hank leave. His gaze flickered briefly with an unreadable light, but his face remained composed. He lowered his head and began typing. "Why did you lie to him?"
"I can tell that he cares about you," Shannon replied. Then, she added after a pause, "But you don't seem to notice."
Though she'd never seen the two brothers exchange more than a few words since Zane's return, Hank's reaction to Zane's matters showed his different attitude from Alex's.
Zane's face remained expressionless after hearing her words. "He hates me."
Zane knew that having a solitary nature and being mute made him an embarrassment as an elder sibling. Plus, his detached attitude toward their parents had sparked significant resentment in Hank during their childhood.
Hank had admitted to hating Zane too.
Shannon dismissed his explanation and said, "How someone feels about you isn't just about what they say. It's about what they do."
This was a lesson Shannon had learned after returning to the Jensens. For instance, Adam wasn't the best at expressing affection, and so was the case for Zane.
