While Lexie was feeling anxious, she heard Shannon tell Cassidy, "You can choose not to go back, but you have to explain everything clearly. Otherwise, they'll think you've gone missing."
Shannon didn't specify who "they" were, but Cassidy understood.
She lowered her head slightly, and after confirming that Shannon wouldn't send her back, she nodded. "I'll say goodbye to Uncle Wayne."
Heston lowered his head slightly at her words, and a flicker of confusion flashed in his eyes. Did Cassidy have an uncle?
"But there's no rush for that," Shannon added.
They needed to arrange a proper stay for Cassidy before taking her back and making everything clear. An orphan with deceased parents would usually be prioritized for adoption by relatives, but the child's wishes had to be considered too.
If the relatives weren't financially well-off and the child refused to live under someone else's roof, there was no need to force things.
Of course, Heston wasn't suited to raise a child either. Cassidy would likely have to rely on an orphanage or something similar.
At this point, Lexie finally grasped the situation and quickly offered a suggestion. "Ms. Oswald who runs Mike's orphanage is a kind lady. Let's send Cassidy there. I'll take care of Heston, while he'll work to support her."
Lexie directed her last sentence at Heston and assumed their contract relationship was a done deal. She planned to nurture his ability to earn money.
Caught off guard at the mention and suddenly tasked with earning money, Heston appeared utterly bewildered.
But soon, he noticed Cassidy's gaze on him. His eyes shifted from her face to her clean new clothes, and he finally understood what earning money meant.
So, he nodded. "Earn money. Buy new clothes."
