Similarly, Benjamin recalled memories of this particular part of the past.
When he laid eyes on that room, the black-and-white room in his mind seemed to be illuminated with color. Scenes flashed through his mind, including an image of him and Shannon lying on the same bed with a mosaic scutes tortoise between them.
Along with these memories, Shannon's peaceful sleeping profile surfaced. Something deep within him stirred and slowly awakened.
He turned to look at Shannon, and his dark eyes clouded with an unreadable emotion. Though he remembered everything clearly, he doubted she'd want to share a room with him.
Sure enough, Shannon said, "You and Kai can take one room. I'll sleep in the smaller room."
They'd shared the room out of necessity, uncertain about the mysteries of Antique Village, and prioritized safety by staying together.
But this time, there was no reason to follow the same arrangement.
Benjamin understood and didn't object. He said, "You stay here. Kai and I will take the other room."
Before she could object, he made up his mind and had Harlan make the arrangements.
Seeing that both of them were in agreement, Harlan complied, though confused.
Instead of having Benjamin squeeze into a room with Kai, he arranged for three separate rooms—one for each of them.
Though he didn't ask them outright, he couldn't help but worry on the way back. "What's going on here?"
Though they'd just met up for half a day, he couldn't help noticing that the atmosphere between the couple was noticeably colder than before.
Emeralda noticed it too, but she wasn't as concerned as Harlan. She simply said, "Isn't it obvious? They had a fight. All couples fight, and it won't be long before they make up."
Harlan pondered her words and nodded. "You're right. That makes sense."
