“If Dr. Valentine can’t explain it, then I’m even more clueless,” Ludwik teased, his gaze lingering on her with a lazy curve to his lips. He lowered his voice, the tone a deep, playful rumble. “But you felt it, right? Kinda dangerous, huh?”

The cocky, devil-may-care look on his face made Whitney bite her lip, at a loss for words.
The threat she’d felt at her fingertips had been way too intense, and now she was overheating. All she wanted was to shake him off.
But Ludwik, playing the wounded puppy, grabbed her hand again, putting on an exaggeratedly pitiful face. “Take it easy on me, Whitney. Look, it’s been pining for you, barely hanging in there. If you go full Hulk-smash on it, my future happiness will be toast.”
And with that, this grown man actually bit his lip, looking like the world’s most miserable victim.
Whitney could’ve just slammed her head into a block of cheddar out of sheer exasperation. Her breath hitched, cheeks flushed. “So what do you want me to do?!”
He gave her a wicked, lazy grin, lounging back against the pillows like he owned the place, somehow managing to look both seriously concerned and shameless at once. “You’re the expert. Interact a little, check if things are really getting better.”
