A young doctor in scrubs knelt beside her, holding a small plush teddy bear, "Hey, Abigail Sinclair. What’s his name?" There was a warm smile on his face.
Abi giggled and clutched the teddy in her arms, "I’m not a kid to hold a teddy like this!" Marissa who was standing close by, hid her smile.
Unlike last night, she and Rafael were more relaxed today. Abi was the most naïve child among her three kids but today she also thought that she was bigger for this teddy.
"Is he brave like you?" The doctor pulled a small disposable glove from his pocket and tied it into a makeshift cape.
"Hihi. Are you changing him into a superhero?" Abigail asked while watching the doctor with interest.
Marissa looked over her shoulder where Rafael stood by the door. She could feel the strained expression on his face behind that easy smile. She went to him and took hold of his hand, "Ready for this?"
Rafael’s hand hovered near her shoulder maybe to comfort her or maybe to hold himself together.
"Abi!" Marissa called her daughter’s name her eyes still on Abigail’s father’s face, "We will be right outside the room."
"Daddy! Can I eat tacos after going home?" she asked Rafael innocently and Rafael had to suppress his smile.
He stepped in, bending down a little to her level, "Absolutely. You can have tacos and if you be a good girl then you can race with Alex too."
"Oh, Georgie told me that he will help me practice," Rafael tilted his head with a frown and found Marissa mouthing silently, "Delinda’s son."
"Okay superhero," the doctor present there interrupted with a playful grin, "I’m going to apply this jelly and ... it’s super cold but it’s the secret to the ultimate power of superheroes," He waved a tube near her face.
A nurse entered the room and then approached the bed holding a clipboard, "I think it’s time to say goodbye to your parents, Abigail."
Marissa glanced at Rafael, whispering, "I think we need to leave the room. She seems to be in..." her voice trailed off, her lips pressing into thin lines, "in good hands, I guess..."
"Hmm," Rafael kept his gaze fixed on his daughter, "she is such a brave girl."
The doctor was telling Abigail the benefits of using the oxygen mask and she was shooting cute silly questions his way.
Rafael’s throat tightened and Marissa looked away briefly, pretending to adjust her skirt. Rafael moved closer to his daughter and kissed her head, "You’re my bravest child, Abigail Sinclair," he whispered to her, and she hurriedly kissed her father’s rough cheek.
Marissa also went to her for a brief kiss. Her girl seemed more interested in discussing magic with the newly arrived nurse.
"I love you!" Marissa told her in a cracked voice trying to stay composed.
"Mommy and Daddy love you, my girl!" Rafael told her and she nodded at them.
"I love you too, Daddy and Mommy," she waved at them excitedly, "B-Bye..."
