She shot the man a look, her eyes pinching with doubts. She blinked twice, trying to confirm if he was the same man.
"It’s rude to stare at someone, Anaya Jakes," Paige reminded her with a sarcastic smile, but Aniya’s gaze remained fixed with a questioning look at the man.
"Y-you were there this morning," she almost whispered to the man, "you h-had a heart attack!"
"What?" Instead of that man, Paige replied with a smirk, "Anaya Jakes. Are you drunk?" But Aniya’s eyes stayed on the man. She was waiting for him to answer her but he was avoiding the eye contact.
"Why did you do it?" Aniya asked him again and kept the man pinned under her gaze until he started feeling uneasy.
"I ... I don’t know you, miss. Who’re you?" he mumbled the question. The other two janitors had stopped packing the stuff and were regarding Aniya and the man with quiet curiosity.
"I’m Aniya... I mean ... I’m Anaya Jakes. We met this morning. Who are you, sir?" she narrowed her eyes.
"Well!" the man shrugged and regarded the corner of the desk as if it was the most important thing in the room, "I don’t know what you’re talking about."
They all were on high alert when the large door at the end of the hall opened with a click and George Donovan’s intimidating figure was there in the doorway.
He must have felt the tension in the room when his eyes darted to the people standing there, "What is going on here?" his eyes then rested on Aniya, "Any problem?"
He was trying to make it sound light, but Aniya could feel the concern in his voice, "Sir. This morning, he wasn’t well, so I just wanted to know if he is doing alright," she told him with a small smile.
The man opened his mouth to say something when Aniya turned to look at him, "Don’t you dare to undermine my claim," she kept her voice low, with that smile still pasted on her face, "If you remember, we have cameras in the office. Or are you planning to erase those recordings?" The man this time gave a confused look to Paige who seemed to be gritting her teeth.
Momentarily they all had forgotten Mr. Donovan’s presence.
"Mr. Desanto. Are you unwell?" George’s voice boomed in the hallway.
"Ye-yes... I’m good now..." Desanto tried to smile and turned his eyes to Paige.
"That’s good," George nodded and turned his attention got back to Aniya, "Ms. Jakes. Can you come inside my office for a moment?"
Good God! No!
"Umm. Sir ..." Aniya rubbed her palms on her uniform in confusion, "Sure, sir."
She nodded at the two janitors who had gotten busy with the packing. Before leaving the hall, she gave Desanto a look that clearly said, "This isn’t over!"

Aniya stepped into his office with hesitation. She wished she could decline the offer but the way he made the request as if she was not a maid but...
But someone very important to him.
He was leaning against his desk, with arms crossed, waiting for her. A playful smile was tugging at his lips, "Right on time," he said nodding towards the chair in front of him, "Take a seat."
She glanced at the leather chair behind the desk, "You aren’t sitting..."
