Jean wasn't about to let Brad leave so easily.
She hurried after him and blocked his way. Grabbing his sleeve, she asked, "Brad, what kind of meeting is it? Shouldn't meetings be over by now?
"I remember you always used to bring me along to your meetings. Can't you take me this time as well? I promise I won't cause any trouble. I'll just sit quietly and wait for you."
Jean knew exactly what kind of event Brad was attending. She just couldn't be too explicit about it.
Since Brad had used the excuse of a meeting, she decided to accompany him.
Brad had no intention of letting Jean know it was Sean's birthday today. Subconsciously, he didn't want Jean anywhere near the party.
Although he adored Jean and was willing to do anything for her, he just couldn't shake the feeling that she shouldn't be there.
So, when she pressed for details, he made up a flimsy lie. What surprised him was that Jean actually said she wanted to attend the meeting with him.
Now, he had no choice but to tell the truth. "Jeanie, to tell you the truth, I'm not going to a meeting. I'm heading to Sean's birthday party. Dad and Grandpa are both there. It wouldn't be appropriate to bring you along."
Daniel and Adam had disliked Jean from the very beginning. Brad had hoped that mentioning them would make Jean back off.
However, instead of retreating, Jean grew more insistent. "I want to come with you, Brad. Please? Don't worry. I won't make any trouble. I just want to wish Sean a happy birthday and leave. Is that too much to ask?"
