Sylvara could only stare, jaw hanging open in disbelief, as Damon vanished beneath the black water, leaving only ripples that quickly settled into an eerie stillness. His final words lingered in the frozen air, as if mocking her with their casual farewell.
Around her, the rest of the clan exchanged uncertain glances, their expressions a mix of confusion, embarrassment, and seething rage. Some muttered under their breath, others simply stared at the pool as though a monster might suddenly jump out from within it.
Sylvara’s hands trembled at her sides, her fists clenched so tightly that her nails bit into her palms. The sheer arrogance of that man!
Even after everything, after her grandfather’s warning, after her own grudging acceptance of his importance, he’d found a way to spit on their legacy, to mock their every effort.
And yet... She couldn’t deny the way he moved in the cold water, the casual ease with which he shrugged off its bone-chilling bite. He was undeniably powerful!
Sylvara ground her teeth and straightened her back. "Listen up!" she barked, her voice sharp enough to snap everyone’s attention back to her.
"Damon may think this place belongs to him, but he’s wrong. This is our trial. Our legacy. And we are going to claim every last piece of it, no matter what that arrogant bastard says."
Her clan rallied around her, their eyes hard and determined.
"Prepare yourselves," she continued. "Every one of you will attempt this trial. We will not rest until every member of this family has claimed their place in the legacy. Damon can play his games all he wants, but the future will belong to us."
Sylvara felt the rage inside her solidify into a cold determination, stronger and sharper than the ice beneath her feet. Let Damon laugh and flaunt his power, she would be the one standing at the top in the end.
She turned her gaze back to the black pool, its surface still as glass. "Blood God," she muttered under her breath, her eyes narrowed. "Enjoy your swim while you can. I’m coming for you." She then dove straight into the pool without any hesitation.
As Sylvara’s body hit the water, an explosion of cold struck her like a thousand icy needles piercing her flesh. Her breath caught, and her lungs convulsed in protest.
The world blurred around her, white and black merging into a haze of pain and determination. She forced her limbs to move, refusing to let herself be swept away by the frigid currents.
Every inch she descended felt like a test, a thousand trials compressed into a single, unending moment. The darkness of the abyss pressed around her, but she refused to yield. Damon might have breezed through this challenge with his infernal smirk, but she could not.
That was fine. I will endure this trial, she thought fiercely, her teeth gritted against the pain. For my clan. For our legacy. For myself.
As the cold seared through her veins and her health bar dropped faster than a stone in water, she reached the first break point and gasped as a new wave of elemental energy crashed into her body. It felt like her very soul was being ripped apart, but she refused to falter.
[Ding! You have gained +1 Ice Affinity]
Her vision blurred with tears she refused to acknowledge. She clawed for another breath, her stamina bar flashing red. I will not let him be the only one to claim this power. I will surpass him. I will—
Unexpectedly, she felt a hand pull her out of the madness. Sylvara gasped as she saw the same arrogant face she loathed. He was still casually sitting, completely stark naked of course. But now they were in some sort of underground cave, a pocket of air. For some reason, the hellish cold water did not enter this space.
"Where am I?" Sylvara deliriously murmured.
"You did good. Why don’t you rest a little?" Damon smiled and placed her on the side, even helping her chug a health potion down.
"You bastard! What are you going to do? Are you going to drink my blood again?" Sylvara half-consciously blabbered.
Damon froze for a moment and then his smile became bigger. Now he understood why the woman had always been against him right from the beginning. It turned out that she remembered after all.
Well, it was not his problem anymore. He took a deep breath and dove deeper once again. The first break point was pretty much not a big deal for him anymore. He needed to delve deeper to reap more benefits.
After about an hour, Sylvara stirred awake to find two more notifications waiting for her.
