The man kept her in place. "Stay put if you don’t want to die. I don’t need your help." He was determined to take down the guards on his own.
"You’re an idiot to think you can leave this place. Lord Ahren has arranged a good number of knights to protect his esteemed guest. If you’re smart, you know the Ahrens are a family of knights. Even if you are skilled, you won’t last long."
The man’s attention was caught by the approaching footsteps, and he heard Erin speak again. "I was aware of your presence here, but I didn’t alert anyone. That means I am not your enemy. Be smart. I have a way to get you out."
"If you hadn’t interrupted me, I would have finished my job by now."
"You might get another opportunity if you aren’t caught tonight. Be sensible and let me show you a way out."
The tip of his knife made a small cut on her neck. "If you act smart, I won’t care if I’m caught, but I will make sure you won’t live to see the next day."
"Alright. Hurry up now," she said.
"Where?"
"To the left corridor."
The man kept the knife at her neck, holding her firmly against his strong body as they moved silently to the left corridor. Just as they turned, the door of Luis’ chamber opened. Both were alert but fortunate to have already taken the turn.
"Why is the entire corridor so dark?" Luis said loudly. "Guards!"
The two guards arrived quickly. "We have noticed it, my Lord, and I have already alerted all the guards and knights."
"Lady Erin was here. See if she has gone. If not, make sure to protect her if there is any threat," Luis ordered.
The two hiding in the dark corner heard this. "Either you let me go back or leave with me," Erin suggested. "I know the secret passage."
He didn’t release her. "Lead the way."
"There, at the end of the corridor," she said. They moved ahead silently, the man still holding her close.
"Move that lamp," Erin instructed.
"Do it," he urged, still unwilling to free her.
Erin reached out and shifted the lamp. The wall moved, revealing a hidden passage.
"My Lord, Lady Erin is not here."
"Where did she go?"
Erin, hearing this, whispered, "I am letting you leave from here. Free me so I can go back to them."
"Why are you helping me?" he asked, suspicion in his voice.
She scoffed lightly. "You are delusional. Hurry up. This corridor will lead you somewhere safer."
He released her and entered the secret passage, his sword raised defensively, his deep eyes gazing at her suspiciously.
In response, Erin offered him a bright smile. "I’m closing the door and moving the lamp back to its place."
The secret door closed and she hurriedly returned in the direction of Grace’s room. Spotting the two men, she called out, "Lord Mortimer!"
A light smirk appeared on Erin’s lips as she returned to her residence. Once Luis’s guard left, Erin turned to her servant. "I have to go somewhere." freewebnσvel.cѳm
