Brilliant fireworks just so happened to rise into the sky outside the window. Evelyn looked up at the inky sky, then looked at Deborah and Leonard, who were recording a video not far away.
She could feel Maria's concern for her. If not for Maria's protection over the past few years, life in the Grant family would have been even more difficult.
"Grandma, we didn't have an argument," Evelyn said gently. "You know Lucas and I rarely do so."
All problems between them were mostly dealt with through silent treatments. Even arguing would require affection as a foundation. However, Lucas only had hatred for her.
Maria was briefly at a loss for words.
She knew the problem between the two of them. No matter how close the relationship was, some friction and arguments were normal.
Evelyn and Lucas had been married for years and were the most important people to each other. Yet the way they lived… They were cold like strangers.
Even though Evelyn had tried everything she could to earn Lucas' heart, there was no effect. He simply didn't buy it. He continued to treat her like a business partner and did everything by the book.
Maria likely didn't know what to make of it either. In the end, she could only sigh.
"That's true. Your granny and the others are getting older, so you should spend time with them. As long as you don't argue, that's all that matters. I'll talk to that brat again. Don't worry, I won't let him take you for granted."
Evelyn knew that Maria was worried about her and Lucas.
After thinking it over, she still gently commented, "Grandma, it's alright. I don't need that anymore."
They were divorced, so there was no need for Maria to do so. She didn't want her to waste her energy doing something pointless.
If Evelyn gave her some context now, Maria would probably be more receptive to it later.
Maria hesitated at those words. She had a feeling that there was more to those words. However, being confused at that moment, she merely said, "Alright then… Spend some quality time with your granny and the others. Say Happy Easter to them for me."
"Okay."
After hanging up, Evelyn let out a soft breath.
After some thought, she decided to borrow the hotel kitchen to make some pastries for Deborah and the others.
Deborah's blood sugar was unstable, but she loved eating pastries. However, the hotel's desserts were far too sugary.
Fortunately, it was easy to express her request to the hotel.
Evelyn made a simple batch of palmiers. During that time, her WhatsApp chimed a few times.
Evelyn took a moment to glance at it. It was from Sophia.
Sophia: "When are you coming back? My mom said you're not making dessert this year?"
Sophia: "How annoying. You know I have to have it today!"
Sophia: "Where are you? Say something!"
Sophia: "Forget it. Are you jealous? Fine, I'll be generous and acknowledge you as my sister-in-law for today. Now, will you come back and make it?"
Evelyn's expression remained unchanged.
Sophia only messaged her when she needed something, and her tone was always commanding and patronizing.
Those years, when Sharron was obsessed with investing in antiques and always flying in and out of the country, she entrusted Sophia to Evelyn's care.
