Chapter 297
“Miss Yates, that’s not what I meant!” Monica hurriedly explained.
She glanced as she continued organizing the documents. “I just think… Prince Leon–well, I really shouldn’t be talking behind his back. Honestly, I’m rooting for you and His Highness.
“But still, his methods were a bit brutal, though. It’s rare to see a woman dragged to the marketplace for a public beheading.”
Monica stared at Jessica and asked, ” Miss Yates, you’ve been in Novigrad for so long. How many times have you heard of something like that?”
Jessica couldn’t help but frown. “Yeah, that is rare,” she mumbled. “Most executions are carried out in secret anyway.”
Jessica asked back, “Then tell me, why would Prince Leon resort to such extreme measures to proclaim his ruthlessness to the world?”
Monica fell into thought. After a long moment, she shook her head, clearly stumped. “I can’t tell, Miss Yates,” she admitted. “Did Prince Leon do it on purpose? And if so, why would he?”
Jessica frowned. “Wasn’t it you who heard the details first? I don’t even know what exactly happened. How could I possibly know why?”
Monica frowned too. “Then why claim it was intentional? You’re acting like you know everything!”
Deep down, Monica thought, ‘Come to think of it, Miss Yates hasn’t left the palace all day. How could she possibly know what’s happening outside? But where did she get such certainty from?‘
Jessica smiled as she flipped through the documents. “Why don’t you fill me in on the details? Let’s see why His Highness would make such a deliberate choice.”
“So you’re certain Prince Leon did this on purpose?” Monica pressed. “On purpose? Making sure the whole world knows about it?”
Jessica didn’t respond, so Monica thought for a moment before saying, “Well, everyone’s saying this female assassin resembles someone–I mean, in mannerisms, not in appearance.”
“Mannerisms?” Jessica interrupted.
“Yeah, she called His Highness a ‘son of a bitch‘–all the servants at Leon House heard it! And then she said, ‘Do your worst–if I so much as scream, I’m not the daughter of… you–know–who.‘ Miss, doesn’t that sound awfully familiar to you?”
Both Monica and Jessica were present during Priscilla’s capture. “Familiar?” Jessica thought. “More like branded into my brain. There’s no way of forgetting that, even if I wanted to.”
Jessica recalled how Waldo behaved back then. He held her chin, looked straight into her eyes, and with a smirk said, “Well now, you’re quite an interesting woman!”
The most interesting part was not the female assassins, but the man who showed interest in his potential killer. A sudden, knowing smile played on Jessica’s lips.
“Miss Yates, what are you smiling about?” Monica asked, feeling strange.
Jessica raised an eyebrow. “Since when are the servants at Leon House gossips like that? Especially during the assassin’s interrogation. What servant would have the clearance to witness the entire process? Let alone be able to recount every single word and action of that assassin in perfect detail.”
Monica also found this strange. Logically speaking, someone like Prince Leon would only keep handpicked and well–trained servants around him. But the rumors circulating outside described everything about the female assassin to the smallest detail. Nothing was left out.
Monica’s eyes widened with sudden realization as she stared at Jessica in disbelief. “Miss, are you saying Prince Leon spread these rumors? What is he planning?”

Jessica remained silent but didn’t deny it either. Fortunately, Monica knew Jessica well. Her silence was as good as admitting it.
