Eventually, the children finished a portion of their homework and finally noticed that someone had entered. The two kids brightened at the sight of her and immediately shot up from their seats, running to her.
Her youngest, Koo, even raised his arms like a toddler, and she found it so adorable.
Koo had just been diagnosed with an intellectual disability at this point, with them telling her he’d probably keep acting like a 7-year-old even if he was well into his 30s. She didn’t really care, she’d just treat him like her baby forever.
Of course, Jane loved her children equally, and their lovely appearance made all the tiredness from work go away.
"Mum! Mum!" Koo yelled, running to embrace her. "Welcome home! Welcome home!"
George smiled as he approached and held her hand, leading her back to the dining table. He carefully put aside their combined study materials and prepared the plates and utensils.
Jane sat down and realized that a simple dinner was already prepared, cooked by her very responsible older son. He was not even 10 years old, yet he already knew how to prepare simple meals for the family. ƒrēewebnovel.com
Today’s meal was rice with a small piece of fried chicken, along with a delicious stir-fried vegetable side dish. This was their go-to meal when there as an occasion because it was the most delicious-but-inexpensive meal they could afford.
That said, she couldn’t help but look at them curiously. "What’s the occasion?"
George smiled, but he did not answer her.
She couldn’t interrogate him though because she noticed that her piece was the biggest. She smiled, touched, but she gave a bit of her poultry to each of the boys.
The two boys shook their heads and gave it back to her. She giggled and put it back, gently tapping their chopsticks in reprimand when they tried to do it again.
"But mom... you’re the one working so hard."
"Well, you two are the ones still growing," she said. "Come on now, it’ll make mummy happy to see you eat a lot."
The boys blinked and looked at each other before reluctantly accepting her point.
The family ate together while the two children told her about their day. They happily chattered about school and their subjects, particularly passionate when their favorite subjects were the topic.
They told her which teacher was nice and fun, and which one was overtly strict and boring. They also told her about their friends, what they did for extracurriculars, and so on.
Jane watched them chatter with a full heart, listening to every word—no, syllable—that they said. She memorized their voices, gestures, and even their breaths.
However, for some reason, her heart clenched the more she looked at them. It was as if there was a feeling of loss that was knocking on her heart but she wasn’t quite sure why that was.
All she knew was that she wanted to stay like this, together with her children—forever.
However... a soft voice sounded at the back of her mind, pulling her back from completely succumbing to this tempting thought.
"Please... don’t leave..."
Jane was very puzzled, but her eyes were fixed at her two smiling sons. Her heart was warm, but also broken. It was too bittersweet and it confused her a lot.
"Please... come back to us..." the small voice continued. It was of a young boy, and it reminded her of her sons a lot.
"Thank you for being our mother," the young George said. "We hope in our next lifetime, you’d still be our mum."
Little Koo nodded, rubbing his fluffy head on her shoulder. "Love you Mummy."
