Goodbye, My Love novel Chapter 22

Jordan wanted to charge into the ward when he heard Ansel's cries, but he almost ran into Sabrina as she came out. She looked at him and said, "Let's talk. Ask one of the nurses to be with him for now."

They headed to the lounge at the end of the corridor. There, she appraised him thoughtfully. "Why did you cheat on me, Jordan?"

She'd thought about many things on the day she'd discovered his affair—was it because of her or something else? Or was it just something on his part? She just couldn't understand why he'd done it.

He could've been frank with her if he'd gotten sick of her and had fallen out of love. Why did he have to go to Holly behind her back?

She couldn't wrap her head around it.

Jordan stiffened. He'd imagined them starting the conversation with anything but this. How was he going to explain himself?

It had been so long that he'd forgotten his reason for being unfaithful in the first place. Still, he knew for a fact that he was the cause of their failed marriage. He'd led to Ansel turning out like this.

Sabrina didn't really expect an answer. She merely turned to look out the window and said calmly, "I'll tell you a secret, Jordan. I'm a Challenger and was sent to this world to win your heart. I was just completing a mission, but I put my heart into it.

"I gave you my heart and fell in love with you. That's why I decided against heading home after completing my mission. I chose to stay here to marry you and start a family with you."

The system had mocked her when she'd made her choice. It had seen countless Challengers, but she'd been the first to remain in a mission world for love.

It had tried to talk sense into her, telling her that all the Challengers before her hadn't hesitated to leave their mission worlds after getting their rewards. They'd done it because they knew why fairy tales ended after the protagonists got married—life after marriage was far from perfect.

The fact that they could easily win the hearts of their targets meant other people could do the same. Besides, the system had already made it clear to them that only two outcomes awaited them if they were to stay—death or separation.

At the time, Sabrina had been overwhelmed by her love for Jordan. She hadn't thought a man who was willing to put his life on the line for her would turn out too badly.

It had been much later that she'd understood it didn't matter how much he loved her. He'd still cheated on her and fallen for someone else.

Jordan clenched his fists tightly, his lips trembling as he processed this. It explained Sabrina's sudden "death". She'd always been in good health, and he'd even hired a nutritionist to care for her after she'd given birth to Ansel. Why would she have suddenly fallen ill?
