"Why didn't you answer the phone?" Leonardo asked.
Feeling a little wronged, Samantha replied softly, "I already replied to your message. I'm heading to class now."
"I'm not talking about that."
"Then which one?"
"The notification for Evergreen's brand ambassador finals."
"There was one?" Samantha was still confused. Then, she suddenly remembered the call she missed while squeezing onto the subway. "Wait… are you talking about that call from the number that starts with 201?"
"Yes."
"I thought it was a scam."
Leonardo was speechless. After a long pause, he finally said, "Your sense of self-protection is quite high. I should commend you for that."
It was clearly just him trying to cover up his awkwardness.
Samantha cautiously asked, "So, if I call back now, is there still a chance?"
"No, the acceptance notifications have ended."
His words, cold and blunt, felt like a slap to her face.
Samantha sighed dejectedly, giving a short hum in response as she drowned in the sorrow of missing the call.
"What's 'Mm' supposed to mean?" Leonardo asked. "Are you giving up already?"
"What else can I do?" she replied. "Am I supposed to choke the person and make them call me again?"
"How can you be so violent?"
She was speechless. She was obviously just talking nonsense.
She was about to hang up and ignore him, but then she heard him speak again. "But you could bribe them."
"That doesn't seem right…"
She was reluctant to spend her money. Even though the audition for Evergreen's brand ambassador was an important opportunity, who would pay money for something they hadn't even secured yet?
"Don't forget that I'm your boss," Leonardo reminded her.
"Are you saying I should bribe you?"
