Nina lay on her bunk, humming softly to herself, a tune she couldn’t quite place but kept repeating it. Her fingers tapped lightly against the metal bedframe as she gazed up at the ceiling, lost in her own thoughts.
The walls of the cell were too cold for her liking but she trusted Rafael. She knew he would soon come and take her out of there.
He loved her so much since childhood and wouldn’t be able to stay away for long.
The dangling of keys snapped her out of her Lala land. The officer who appeared outside her cell kept his expression neutral, "Visitor for you!" he announced gruffly.
Nina bolted up, quickly straightening her shirt and running a hand through her hair.
"Rafael!" the thought of her precious child made her pulse quickened. A small smile tugged at her lips.
I knew it!
She followed the officer down the hallway, their steps echoing on the concrete floor. As they neared the meeting room, she could feel her heart jumping in excitement in the cradle of her chest. She could almost picture Rafael’s apologetic face, begging her to let him explain himself. He didn’t mean to do any of it and was eager to make everything right for her. She could hear him pleading to her for coming back to his life.
However, when she stepped into the room, her smile froze. Sitting calmly on the other side of the glass divider was Valerie, dressed in a fitted blazer, with her legs crossed.
Nina stopped dead in her tracks.
Huh. She must be here to ask me to take her back as my daughter-in-law. Now she knows what power I hold as a Sinclair woman. But this time I won’t trust Valerie. Her number one choice is still Geena.
Nina’s shock quickly turned into fury, "What are you doing here?" she hissed sharply.
A smug smile touched Valerie’s lips as she eyed Nina, "Hello, Nina!" she gestured towards her, "You look good... and classy too. Haha," Nina didn’t understand why she was laughing like this, "Long time, no see."
Nina wished she could kill Valerie and would have dropped dead on the spot, "Why are you here?" she snapped, her voice dripping with venom, "And where is my son?"
At this, Valerie threw her head back and laughed hard, the sound echoing in the small room, "Your son?" she repeated mockingly, and then did something unexpected. She wiped an imaginary tear off the corner of her eye.
"Oh, my dear, sweet, Nina. You really are delusional," she leaned forward slightly, her smile widening, "He’s not your son, sweetheart. Do you know where he is?" her question made Nina’s heart drop in the pit of her stomach.
Where is Rafael? Partying in my absence?
"He is with his family, Nina... where he belongs."
Nina’s jaw tightened, and her nostrils flared with hatred, "What do you mean?" she demanded in a raised voice, "What family? What’s going on?"
Nina wanted to break the glass between them when Valerie didn’t respond to her, "I’m his family, Valerie. I’m his mom."
Valerie leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms, "Abi is having surgery, Nina. Rafael and Marissa are at the hospital along with their friends."
