Before midnight, she left the hostel and took a cap to George’s apartment building. Halfway there, she realized she had forgotten her phone.
Once she reached the reception, she waited for the manager to finish his call. The man had seen her with George and was trying to convince someone to fix the garden tap before the tenants came after him.
Like a good girl, she decided to wait while all she wanted to do was hold him by the collar and ask him to call George down.
She was standing there with her feet, aching in exhaustion. She was still deciding if she should protest when the entrance door behind her flew open making her flinch and a girl came inside with an easygoing aura.
"Sweetheart. I need to go to my boyfriend’s apartment. You know me, right?" she didn’t even care that he was busy on the phone. Aniya tilted her head, and she thought she was imagining it.
A girl who looked so much like her mom but a younger version of her, stood there chewing gum. She flashed Aniya a friendly smile before heading towards the elevators.
Aniya thought she had seen a ghost.
The girl looked so much like Valerie that for a moment Aniya thought someone had played a sick joke on her.
Her heart was still thudding in her chest when the manager gave her an apologetic smile, "Yes, miss?"
"Can you call Mr. George Donovan to the reception area?" she said with a nervous smile, "he knows me. Just tell him that Anaya Jakes wants to meet him."
She wasn’t planning to go to his apartment. It was supposed to be a short visit just to hand him the gift.
After a few minutes, George came out of the elevator with a wild look on his face, "Anaya! Oh goodness! What a pleasant surprise!"
He pulled her into a hug, "Let’s go to my ..." he trailed off when she drew back from his arms, "I can’t. Not tonight, George. I’m here to give you this," she extended the packed gift his way, "Happy birthday to you." freёweɓnovel.com
George seemed stunned, "Y-you knew..." he took the gift from her hands, and she noticed a flicker of emotion on his face. He looked touched.
"Yes. I knew. What did you think? If you won’t tell me, I’ll not know?"
George opened the gift and took out the small warrior. He examined it in his hand and then not caring that the manager was still there, he kissed hard on Aniya’s lips before squeezing her tight into his chest, "This..." he breathed against her neck, "This is the best gift I ever got!"
Aniya was a little taken aback when she noticed the moisture in his eyes. She felt like her struggle for the gift had paid off.
George wanted to drive her back, but she insisted that he should stay home. Later he sent her along with his car and the chauffeur.
On her way back, the girl who looked like Valerie was stuck in Aniya’s mind. Who was she?
What if God was showing her the sign that Valerie might return to her life? Aniya shuddered. She wished Valerie would never be able to find her. Because if she did, that meant Dorian Maxwell would also be there to claim her.
