Sebastian had already been prepared for Sabrina to turn him down. He hadn't expected her to respond in this manner.
After a slight daze, happiness flashed in his eyes. "Of course! Let's go right now."
When they arrived at the Lakeworth residence, Sabrina looked at the little girl sitting before the window and hugging a teddy bear. A trace of pity flashed in her eyes.
She'd met many children in the mission world. Ansel had never had a shortage of love, so he'd always looked cheery and spirited. His eyes were bright with happiness.
The orphans at the orphanage she donated to had lost their parents, but the employees there had given them more than enough love. There were also kind people who would play with them every week. They, too, had no shortage of love.
None of the children were like the little girl she now saw—her eyes were dull, and she stood nervously in a corner with her arms wrapped around her teddy bear.
Sabrina's heart ached at the sight. Perhaps it was from the remnants of her motherly love.
Sebastian also sounded sorrowful when he said, "Her name is Isabel Lakeworth; she's six this year. Two years ago, she got into an accident with her parents.
"They shielded her beneath their bodies, so she made it out alive. She hasn't been in the best state since witnessing her parents' deaths; she doesn't dare to interact with others or leave the house. She's almost always in this state of terror and needs someone to watch her around the clock."
As he spoke, he pushed open the door to the villa. Isabel heard him return and came running, wanting to throw herself into his arms. "Dad!"
But when she saw Sabrina standing beside Sebastian, her expression turned into one of fear. She screamed and ducked into a tent that had been set up for her.
"It's okay, Isabel. I'm here for you. Sabrina won't hurt you, okay?" Sebastian crouched before the tent and tapped on the door.
Sabrina joined him, saying softly, "Hi, Isabel. My name is Sabrina. I have many stories to tell you; do you want to hear them?"
She and Sebastian had to coax Isabel for a long time before she unzipped the tent and carefully poked her head out. She only held out her arms for Sebastian to hold her when she saw that they meant no harm.
