Laura was still yelling on the other end of the line.
"Who were you just talking to? That vixen Samantha came looking for you again, didn't she? I went through so much trouble to get rid of her! Leo, get a grip!
"Women like her are fine to fool around with, but marriage? That's just ridiculous! I'm doing this for your own good. Look at the kind of woman Kevin married—how could you bring home someone like Samantha and not feel ashamed? I'm embarrassed for you!"
"This is my business. You don't need to get involved."
"I don't need to? I'm your mother! Of course I need to!" Laura was so furious her chest heaved, and her face mask almost slipped off.
"Look at Kevin now—he's already a vice president thanks to your father's support. I never wanted you to start Evergreen Corporation on your own. If you'd just joined the family business, you would be in the same position or even better!"
"I have my own plans."
"Plans? What are your plans? I know you're capable—taking a brand this far quickly is no small feat. Both your grandfather and I can see that. But no matter how much effort you put into Evergreen Corporation, it'll never compare to the Garrett Group's century-old legacy.
"Are you really going to hand all of it over to an illegitimate son without a proper name or status? Leo, you're my son—you're the rightful heir of the Garrett family! You need to take everything back!"
"Mom," Leonardo cut her off, his voice calm. "I'll make my own decisions about my life. And also, please don't come to my place again."
"What did you just say? Leonardo, what the hell did that woman do to you that you would talk to your own mother like this!"
At some point, Samantha had gone to the kitchen. When she returned, she was holding two cups of peppermint tea.
Seeing that Leonardo was still on the phone, she didn't say anything. She just quietly placed the cups of tea on the coffee table and sat down, waiting for him to finish.
Leonardo said, "Got it. I'm hanging up."
"What? You haven't even answered whether you're returning to Garrett Group! And even if we don't talk about that, you still need to divorce that woman!"
"That's it for now."
"What do you mean, 'that's it'? Leonardo, are you even listening to me?" Laura roared in frustration. She felt like every word she said fell on deaf ears. That kind of helplessness only made her even angrier.
